- Atalanta have won two and lost just one of their three away games in the Champions League.
- Union St.-Gilloise have lost all three of their home games in the Champions League, conceding 11 goals.
An exciting, aggressive, and energetic clash awaits
Union St.-Gilloise have lost their last three home matches in the UEFA Champions League and they will face one of the group’s most impressive sides in Atalanta Bergamo on Wednesday. David Hubert took the helm in October 2025 and has brought an exciting, new, and very aggressive style of play to the Belgian champions.
Union press furiously and get their wing-backs forward at every opportunity, looking to force errors and play on the counter. They can be a bit all over the place, but that’s part of their unique identity, and it’s worked to an extent - they’re 31st in the UEFA Champions League 2025/2026 with six points from seven games.
Union have the talent to trouble Atalanta, but the Italians are 13th with 13 points after a much better group-stage performance. Raffaele Palladino took over in November 2025 and he has brought a greater sense of balance to the Bergamaschi, who have been impressively structured in their build-up play while also showing the typical Italian flare at the other end.
Stakes are high for both sides
This will be an interesting battle, with Union’s relentless pressing style pitted against Atalanta’s more structured approach, but the momentum and confidence of both clubs have risen since the appointment of their respective new head coaches. Union will need to improve their home form to reach the knockout stages, and with wins in both of their most recent home matches, they have picked up some momentum.
The hosts are coming off a disappointing 2-0 defeat away to Bayern Munich and a 0-0 draw away to Oud-Heverlee Leuven. Atalanta have won three, drawn one and lost one of their last five in all competitions, a sequence that saw a 1-1 away draw with Pisa, a 2-3 home defeat to Athletic Bilbao and a 4-0 home thrashing of AC Parma.
Atalanta to edge a close match
Atalanta will be the favourites here, but the odds of 28/25 look a little low considering Union come into this clash as the home side and are priced at 11/5. It’s expected that the Italians will be the better side on the night and it will take a huge effort from the hosts to win.
However, the Over 2.5 goals bet at 67/100 looks like good value considering the attacking style of both sides and the fact that they have both been relatively leaky at the back. Atalanta have conceded just four times on the road, while Union have conceded 11 in their three home defeats in this competition.
Nikola Krstovic is on fire for the Bergamaschi with four goals in his last five games, helping to propel Atalanta to 10 goals in that same five-match period. Anan Khalaili is the main man in attack for Union with two goals in seven appearances in the competition, while Promise David has been their main outlet of late, scoring two of their four goals in their last five matches.
Charles De Ketelaere is Atalanta’s top scorer in the Champions League this term with two in six and he will drive the visitors’ play against the Belgians on Wednesday.
