Open game expected when new kids on the block meet
Viking FK are in good form ahead of their UEFA Champions League 2026-2027 debut against VfB Stuttgart at MHPArena on Wednesday. The Norwegian club have won six of their last ten games across all competitions and lost only once - and they are unbeaten in their last five matches.
Morten Jensen has done a marvellous job at Viking since taking over in January 2021. His 4-3-3 system keeps them compact and organized in their deep blocks and allows them to counter-attack with speed when the time is right. They have a well-balanced squad, so they should be right up for this clash against Bundesliga opposition and it could be a great game if the visitors play with the same confidence that has seen them win 1-3 at IL Brodd in the NM Cup away from home and 1-1 at Sandefjord in Eliteserien recently.
Stuttgart have won two out of two at home in all competitions this season and have scored an average of 3.50 goals per game in that time. Sebastian Hoeneß has been in charge since April 2023 and has made them a very direct, high-press team. They score plenty of goals and have a real go at teams, so we could see a very open game on Wednesday rather than the chess match that some think might happen.
Viking are worth backing at huge odds
Vikingene have a perfect plan to play against a team like Stuttgart. They will be compact and disciplined enough to stay in the game for long periods, but also have enough quality to pick off the spaces that Die Schwaben's high-press, possession-based game will leave behind the full-backs.
The odds here make Viking's task very clear. They are available at 17/2 to win the game, which is far too big in my view, and the other main recommendation has to be Over 2.5 goals at 7/25 and Both Teams to Score at 57/100. A Viking win would be the smart move in the 90-minute market, but Stuttgart can definitely get on the scoresheet and should be good for a goal.
