Mbappé sets new World Cup goals record

The officials always get dragged into these conversations because people want to decide which goals count and which matches matter and half the time it feels like the rules are being bent to suit the narrative instead of the football, like one minute everyone says records are sacred and the next minute theyre saying ah but that game was too unserious so it should not count, well make your mind up, if the match is there then the goals count and that is the end of it, and it does not help when the whole debate turns into a weird argument about whether a player deserves credit for showing up and scoring just because someone in a suit decided the format, absolutely ridiculous

People always do this with records they dont like, they move the goalposts and pretend the context suddenly makes the numbers worthless, but the truth is if a player keeps scoring at this level then the record is real and the rest is noise, and Mbappe has been doing it for long enough now that you cannot just wave it away because you fancy a different conversation, the lad is a problem every tournament and the way he keeps finding these moments is exactly why he is going to be spoken about for years and years and people will still be arguing about it long after he has gone

The most impressive part is the consistency across tournaments. A goal per game is elite by any standard, and it explains why the record has moved so quickly once he got going. That kind of efficiency is what separates great scorers from everyone else.

It is a huge achievement, but the third-place debate is understandable. Still, you can only score in the matches you are given.

Nah i dont buy the whole stat padding thing because if it was so easy then loads of players would be doing it and they arent, he still has to turn up and finish chances and that is where the difference is, people are acting like it fell in his lap when it clearly didnt

The raw numbers are obviously stunning, but I do think the context matters a little. World Cup scoring is often helped by certain fixtures, yet that does not take away from how consistently he has delivered when it counts.

he just keeps doing it and its getting to the point where it feels normal which is mad because 22 world cup goals should never feel normal and everyone trying to reduce it to one extra match is missing the point a bit because you still need the quality to finish the chances and he clearly has it in buckets

I know people want to sneer at the third place match and act like this is somehow lesser because of the context but I will absolutely defend the side of the player here because the numbers only exist if someone actually scores them and he has done that over and over again, and it is not his fault that the format gives him another game to do damage in, you could give ten other players that same opportunity and they would not suddenly reach this mark because they do not have the same movement, the same composure, the same belief, and the same ability to turn half chances into headlines, so while everyone else is busy being clever about what counts and what does not count I am just going to say he has been sensational and he deserves the credit because he has dragged this record into his own hands and made a mockery of the old numbers
