Two clubs with loyal fan bases clash on Saturday
Adelaide Croatia Raiders and Salisbury United clash on Matchday 2 of the HPG Homes SA State League 1 in a game that could make or break each team’s early momentum in the 2026 campaign. The Raiders would do well to overcome their opening weekend defeat to Modbury Jets, which is just their latest setback in a tumultuous few years that saw relegation and a run of heavy defeats in 2025.
Croats boss Phil Scardigno has the experience to steady the ship, although he must now prove that he can build a team capable of pushing for promotion. Scardigno’s system is a pragmatic 3-4-3 that allows his wing-backs to advance into the attack and creates a rapid transition from defence to attack.
The Raiders are in good hands with experienced players at each position and an attacking mindset that should see them create a great deal of danger on the flanks. Their problem is keeping the ball out of their net at the other end, something they failed to do in their 3-1 defeat at Modbury.
Raiders’ wingers look to test United’s resolve
Salisbury United began their SL1 campaign with a 1-1 draw at home to Cumberland United, leaving them with one point from a game in which they scored one goal and conceded one.
Matt Gaston is a proven SA manager with a good knowledge of the area and his team is built on the platform of a back four who are comfortable in possession. The structure they provide for Golden Boot-winning striker Matt Taylor, who is the league's top scorer, enables him to be the focal point of United's attack and allows their compact midfield to frustrate the opposition.
Gaston’s side will surely want to keep the score down and take their chances in a controlled manner when they appear. But the Raiders will do their utmost to press Salisbury’s midfield into errors by running at them with their wing-backs and central midfielders.
Close game likely, but Adelaide have good fresh form
Adelaide Croatia Raiders warmed up for the 2026 season with a 2-0 friendly win over Salisbury in January 2025, but their recent form is poor heading into this game. A result for the Raiders on Matchday 2 would ease the pressure on them a little bit, while Salisbury can consolidate their good start by getting a result away from home.
Backing the draw at 4.6 seems the way to go here as the two teams seem evenly matched and have contrasting styles that could be well suited to a stalemate.
The Raiders' only recent win was a narrow cup victory, and otherwise they have struggled defensively.
Salisbury United drew 1-1 in their opener with Cumberland United, but had mixed results and several late-2025 defeats. Backing a 1-1 draw in this contest seems a good move, but either team could win if their respective talismans fire.
Isaac Matikulas has been a recent goalscorer for the Raiders, while Jai King-Byrne and Marco Torriani provide the real set-piece threat and aerial presence in the home side’s box. Taylor will lead the line for United, who lack a goalscorer of his quality, but the talented striker is more than capable of getting on the scoresheet again on Saturday.
