APIA should be the team to tame
A home match against NWS Spirit FC should not be an insurmountable task for NPL New South Wales 2026 leaders APIA Leichhardt Tigers, who have won 68 points from their 30 matches to set the pace at the top of the table, this Sunday.
APIA, or Tigers, have won 13, drawn one and lost just one of their 15 home games in the NPL New South Wales 2026, scoring a whopping 38 goals at an average of 2.53 per-game, while visitors Spirit have won just three, drawn five and lost seven on their travels.
There is a huge contrast in styles between these two teams and the matchup will have all the intrigue of a chess match. APIA like to have the ball, control the play and press their opponents high when they do not, while Spirit's direct, high-tempo transition game is built to punish any sloppy build-up and spring vertical attacks in a flash.
In their most recent trio of fixtures, APIA lost 0-1 to Melbourne Victory after extra-time in the Australia Cup 2026, drew 0-0 away to Sydney United in the NPL New South Wales 2026 and then beat St George City FA 4-2 at home in the NPL New South Wales 2026, while Spirit were flying with a 4-0 away win over Manly United, a 1-0 home win against SD Raiders FC and a 1-1 away draw with Marconi Stallions.
APIA can keep Spirit at arm’s length
Franco Parisi's men have been settled since he took over on 1 January 2023 and have played some fantastic football all over the pitch. They should be able to control the game, squeeze Spirit in the middle of the park and turn any turnover into chances.
Tigers have won two of the last three head-to-heads, including a 2-1 away victory three months ago, and they have had the edge on their own patch in the last three home head-to-heads. The away side are no pushovers and have form to beat APIA, but this is a true test of their character.
Both teams to score at 1.65 is tempting, but the Tigers have won their way to the top of the league and have the home advantage, so a 2-1 victory for the home side looks a much sharper play in the correct score market.
