- Auckland FC finished 3rd and Adelaide United FC 2nd in the regular A-League Men 2025/26 season.
- The two teams have played four open, close matches over the last two A-League seasons (three draws and one narrow win each), most recently in March at Coopers Stadium (1-1).
- Auckland are unbeaten in their last four matches across all competitions, including an elimination final win against Melbourne City in a dramatic penalty shootout.
Home advantage and momentum on Auckland’s side
Auckland FC are priced at 1.99 to defeat Adelaide United FC in the first leg of their A-League playoff semi-final clash on Saturday, with the visitors available at 3.66. The difference in odds is mainly due to home advantage, but the truth probably lies somewhere between the two, with Auckland coming into the game on the back of a strong home form and a big penalty shootout win, while Adelaide are in better rhythm in attack.
It promises to be a cagey first-leg encounter, but one that could feature several goals given both teams are well-equipped in attack and the recent history of the head-to-head suggests that over 2.5 goals, which is priced at 1.67, could be the best bet.
The stakes are high as the winner will earn the hosting rights and home ground advantage for the Grand Final, and probably a better shot at winning the championship, so both teams will have something to play for on Saturday.
Auckland are a compact, disciplined and well-organised unit under Steve Corica, the A-League Coach of the Year. They are tough to break down and will press the ball in numbers to try to force turnovers and catch Adelaide off guard on the counter attack. They will not offer much width when they are under pressure, but when in possession, the Kiwis are very wide in their approach, looking to attack through the channels in the wide areas.
Jovanović is the dangerman and key to Adelaide’s success
Adelaide are a young and exciting team, coached by the talented and forward-thinking Airton Andrioli. He has promoted a few young players through the ranks, built a compact mid-block, played his best footballers in their best positions and instilled a pressing game that has served the Reds well in the final few months of the season.
Their attack has been in fine form recently and Luka Jovanović is their talisman and the 2025/26 A-League Golden Boot winner with 11 goals. Youngsters Ryan White and Brody Burkitt have chipped in with goals and assists in the late-season surge, but Jovanović is still the spearhead of Adelaide’s attack and the best player on the pitch on most occasions.
Ethan Alagich provides Adelaide with some creativity in midfield and a set-piece threat, as he has proven during their late-season surge.
Cosgrove key for Auckland but may be limited
Sam Cosgrove is Auckland’s main attacking threat and also a Golden Boot joint winner with Jovanović, but his injury may keep him out of this game or limit his impact on it. In his absence, Guillermo May has stepped up and slotted key goals, including the equaliser in the elimination final against Melbourne City, and looks the most likely to score in this semi-final first-leg.
Auckland’s momentum and home form are in their favour for this game, but it is very close to call as Adelaide will be riding the momentum of their recent form. With both sides looking strong at the back, the match will be won in the midfield and who can dictate the tempo. Auckland will press and try to make Adelaide play in front of their fans, whereas Adelaide will sit back in their mid-block and try to suffocate the hosts.
This should be a good game and Auckland’s defensive steel and penalty heroics could be key, but I would not put much faith in the Auckland win here. I would rather back a score draw as the main bet, or a very narrow Auckland home win in the draw no bet market, as the visitors will be too big a handful for the hosts to contain for the full 90 minutes. The weather forecast for the Go Media Stadium is mild and mostly dry, which should suit the attacking styles of both sides and aid the transition from defence to attack quickly. Watch for Cosgrove’s influence, Jovanović’s movement and set-piece situations to be pivotal moments in the match.
