Youthful City to outplay experience Greens
Bentleigh Greens SC and Melbourne City NPL will be looking over their shoulders at the relegation zone when they face off at Kingston Heath on Friday with both teams on 14 points from 11 games and in eighth and seventh place respectively in the 2026 NPL Victoria.
The hosts have hit a rough patch of late, coming into this crucial six-pointer having lost three, drawn one and won just one of their last five league games. The Greens have lost back-to-back fixtures after a 4-0 away defeat at Oakleigh Cannons was followed by a 2-4 home reverse against St Albans Saints.
City, meanwhile, have also been in patchy form with two defeats, two draws and one win in their last five, but did halt a two-game losing streak with a superb 2-1 away win over South Melbourne just five days ago.
Greens are pragmatic and physical
They will need to be at the top of their game again to get past a Bentleigh Greens side that is a lot more pragmatic and structured than City. Their coach is known for his astute tactical acumen and his team will set up to be a tough nut to crack in this game.
The Greens have the experience and the core of senior players to provide stability and leadership when things get tough, as they often do in tight and tense league matches.
But Melbourne City are managed under a City Football Group philosophy and have instilled their youthful, technical and energetic style throughout the ranks. They play at a high tempo, using their midfield to control the ball and territory and pressing high up the pitch to try to win it back.
City’s youthful exuberance can pay off
Bentleigh Greens will be compact and will counter attack with numbers when they can, and it could be an intriguing tactical clash that will be compelling for the neutral. City’s young attacking players thrive on the counter and their high-tempo style creates plenty of opportunities for them to get at their opponents.
Bentleigh have conceded six goals in five home games this season, so they are not invulnerable to the counter attack, although they have been better than expected at home with three wins, one draw and a defeat from their five outings.
City have a better away record this term with one win, one draw and a loss in their last three NPL away games and the odds of 1.88 about the visitors to take all three points on Friday are tempting, albeit not quite enough for us. Bentleigh Greens are listed at 3.45 in the outright market, which is a bit short given their recent poor run, but the odds are still good enough to take in the ‘Both teams to score - Yes’ market at 1.6.
