- Melbourne City NPL have won their last 3 matches on the trot.
- City are better at home than on the road in NPL Victoria 2026, winning just 1 of 6.
- Dandenong Thunder SC have won 2 and lost 4 of their 6 away matches in NPL Victoria 2026.
City are coming in hot
The hosts, Melbourne City NPL, have hit their stride, winning their last three on the spin, and look well-placed to take the points on Sunday against a Dandenong Thunder SC side in mixed form.
City have been in great goalscoring form themselves, scoring ten goals in their last two matches, and will pose a big threat to Thunder’s defense. In their most recent NPL fixture they thrashed Bentleigh Greens 7-0 away from home and followed that with a 3-1 victory away at Green Gully Cavaliers.
NPL Victoria’s current title race is tighter than a corset, and City, in seventh, are still very much in the mix for the championship. With 20 points from 13 games, they are just above Dandenong Thunder SC, who have 12 points from the same number of fixtures.
Thunder should be up for a scrap
Thunder’s recent form has been mixed, with two wins, one draw and two losses from their last five. They have struggled on the road this season, but have won two of their last three on their travels.
The hosts are 1.67 favourites with the bookies ahead of this game, but it’s not a result to be sure about, with Thunder and the draw both coming in at 3.9.
Thunder drew 1-1 at home to City in their last head-to-head, so a derby vibe should ensure that the visitors turn up for this one.
City’s pressing and possession play vs Thunder’s width and physicality
City have had a lot of success under their academy coaching structure, and play a high-tempo, possession-based game with players who can press in unison and a positional discipline in their pressing triggers and lines.
Thunder, on the other hand, are more direct, focusing on exploiting the width of the pitch, with some set-piece specialists and a number of players who can bring the physicality on their day.
The clash of styles should see plenty of action in midfield and out wide as City look to progress the ball while Thunder try to disrupt it.
Expect goals in this one
City have scored eight goals in six home matches this season, which is a decent return given their overall attack-minded output. They are a much better team than their current league position suggests, and should have too much quality for Thunder on Sunday.
City’s poor home record this term, however, gives pause for thought, and the fact that they are in the midst of a three-match winning run perhaps makes them vulnerable in some fashion.
The ‘Both teams to score - Yes’ market is priced as a 1.57 favourite, which is too short for me, so I’m expecting an attacking game from both teams.
