- Charlotte have won three, drawn two and lost just one of their six home games in MLS 2026.
- Toronto FC are on a run of three defeats, two draws and no wins in their last five.
Tight match expected in Charlotte
Charlotte FC are currently sitting one place above Toronto FC in the MLS 2026 table, with 15 points from their first 12 matches seeing them occupy 17th spot, compared to TFC’s 14 from 12 games, occupying 20th. Both sides will see this as a chance to close the gap on the teams above, and the tight match should be an intriguing tactical battle.
Dean Smith is a manager with a clear identity, and it has shown since his arrival at Charlotte. The club will be energetic, press the opposition relentlessly and be willing to adapt their system depending on the game. Smith likes to overlap his wide players, and his side have scored plenty of goals as a result, but there’s a reason why they’ve been so poor in recent weeks. A 2-2 draw with FC Cincinnati at home and a 1-0 defeat to New England Revolution away have given them a recent record of four defeats, one draw and no wins in their last five in all competitions.
Visitors Toronto FC are coming off consecutive home defeats, the first a 3-1 loss to Atletico Ottawa in the Championship, followed by a 4-2 defeat to Inter Miami CF in the MLS. Robin Fraser is a pragmatist at heart, preferring to set his teams up to soak up pressure, absorb opponent attacks and strike on the break. He is willing to switch between back-three and back-four formations, but his main focus is on being tight at the back and allowing his wide men to get forward.
Goals at both ends expected
Fraser’s system will be tested by Charlotte’s front-foot approach, as the home team are likely to press them into mistakes and catch them on the counter-attack.
Toronto FC’s recent away form against Charlotte has been poor, with no win in their last two trips to the state of North Carolina, and the most recent head-to-head saw Charlotte win 2-0 on the road in MLS 2025.
With Toronto’s porous defence on the road and Charlotte’s firepower at home, I’m backing the hosts to take the points here at 1.86. Pep Biel has been the driving force behind Charlotte’s attacks so far this season, with six goals in 12 MLS 2026 appearances, but Emilio Aristizabal has added a new dimension to Toronto’s attack, scoring three goals in his last five appearances.
Both sides are likely to find the net here, so I’m also backing a result of ‘Both Teams to Score - Yes’ at 1.58. The fact that the visitors are trying to be tight at the back means this should be an end-to-end, entertaining fixture. I’m going for ‘Total Score Over 2.5’ at 1.69.
