Toluca transition to attack, Leon play it patient
The weather may be unpredictable at the Nemesio Díez this Sunday, but the game is not. Toluca FC will come at León with a solid, compact block in defense and then look to explode in transition on the break whenever they win the ball.
Antonio Mohamed’s experienced eye has had the perfect mix of patience and poacher’s instinct to set up this team and the pace of Helinho and other wide attackers on the wings to complement the finishing ability of Paulinho. Toluca’s attacking play is built around their ability to press in waves and then the ball is instantly back downfield, where Paulinho waits to pounce.
León prefer to play a more possession-based game, building from midfield, but sometimes the game has caught up with Javier Gandolfi in recent weeks. His side have often been caught out on the counter-attack in the middle of the park, or at the back, since the change in tactics after his appointment in March.
Paulinho the key to Toluca’s hopes
Paulinho has been the key player in the recent performances of Toluca as his side have been on a steady run of form, although they did fall into a pair of draws with Atlético San Luis and a narrow loss at Club América this month. Sandwiched in between those results were wins in the CONCACAF Champions Cup, so it could be that the packed fixture list is catching up with the side.
León, on the other hand, have been excellent in April, winning three of their last four league games, including a 2-0 victory at Atlas and a 3-1 win at Juárez. Gandolfi seems to have instilled some confidence since his March appointment, and now they can hold their own with anyone in the Mexican top flight.
Bookmakers have it wrong for this clash
The bookmakers have this game completely wrong with Toluca as short as 1.31 to win, León at 8.8 and the draw at 5.6. This fixture almost always produces goals and Toluca may have the league position to back up their status as favourites, but I’ll take León on momentum to make a game of this one.
I think the value is in the Over 2.5 goals market at 1.4 as the two clubs have been scoring plenty recently and León need the points in this last round of the regular season to secure or better their playoff position while Toluca have to lock in their top-five Liguilla seeding with a win.
Fireworks expected when Toluca and Leon meet
The home side should have enough quality to nick it, but Leon are playing with a swagger in recent games and they might score again on Sunday. I will also be very interested to see if Helinho is back in contention for Toluca after he was recently sent off.
With the pace and trickery of the Brazilian winger available, Toluca are a completely different team and Jesús Gallardo’s ability to bring the play from the back provides another dimension to the side. Federico Pereira and Bruno Méndez are there to provide the defensive platform and they should have just enough to beat Leon in this one.
Recent head-to-heads have included a 4-2 win and a 3-3 draw, so there is little to split them and this should be another thriller in their long and illustrious fixture list.
