- León are 13th in the Liga MX table with 13 points, Atlas are 6th with 18.
- Atlas are a solid unit, tough to break down and dangerous on the break.
Lions seek to maul an organised Atlas
Leon will look to claw their way back into playoff contention with a win over the tough mid-table side CF Atlas Guadalajara when the two clubs meet in Liga MX’s Clausura campaign at Estadio Leon on Sunday.
The Lions are in poor form after a woeful run of four defeats in their last five games, including a 3-0 home defeat to Tijuana and a 5-0 loss at Guadalajara.
Javier Gandolfi was appointed in March 2026 to steady the ship and he has brought in a possession-based style with vertical pressing from the wide areas and high pressing lines. But after a string of changes in the technical area, the side has no clear identity and seems low on confidence.
Atlas can’t be trusted to push on
The Lions will need to improve on both of those displays if they are going to beat an Atlas side that Diego Cocca has remoulded into a team that is defensively solid, structured and dangerous on the counter since he returned to the bench in August 2025.
Veteran keeper Camilo Vargas is the anchor in the middle of a 5-at-the-back block that is narrow and deep. They can open it up to play through the middle of the pitch, but they are generally a team that needs to be lured out of their shell in order to be exploited.
Eduardo Aguirre’s finishing and through-the-ball play is the main goal threat for Atlas while Diego González provides directness and a good finishing touch to their attacks in the final third.
Odds-on bet is a bit much for Atlas
Atlas are the slight favourites in almost every model and most expert previews, but we feel this could be closer than the market makers think. The visitors are unlikely to push on for a win if they get ahead, while Leon will need to force the issue if they are to close the gap on the playoff places.
The draw is worth a bet at 3.5 and we have gone for a 2-1 Atlas win in the correct score market as the most likely result for small stakes. Leon are 2.25 favourites to win the match which is a shade on the short side considering they have lost four of their last five league matches and Atlas are very tough to crack at the moment.
Both teams to score is heavily favoured at 1.62 and we agree that it looks likely given each side’s recent defensive troubles. The game will be played in warm, dry conditions in León and could feature plenty of action as both coaches look to impose their plans on the game.
León’s Diber Cambindo is the most reliable goalscorer on the pitch this season for a side that has been in turmoil since the end of the previous campaign. Atlas and León shared the points in their two Liga MX meetings last season, Atlas won 2-0 at home in October 2025 and León won 2-1 away in January 2025.
