- Since 2022, Dunedin City Royals have won 4, drawn 2 and lost 2 of 8 head-to-head clashes in all competitions against Nelson Suburbs FC.
- In the Southern Premier League 2026 table, Nelson Suburbs are 6th on 15 points from 11 games, while Dunedin City Royals are 8th on 10 points from 11.
- Nelson's most recent 3 of 5 Southern League matches featured 6, 5 and 3 goals. Dunedin have suffered 6-0 and 3-0 defeats in their last 5.
Southern League derby in favour of Nelson
Nelson are the slight favourites here at 1.74, with Dunedin 3.54 and the draw at 4.1, but there looks to be good reason for this derby to go the way of the visitors.
Nelson have been in the better form with a pair of convincing wins - 6-0 over Wanaka and 5-3 away to Coastal Spirit - in their last five games while the Royals have slipped to a couple of heavy defeats in that time.
Blair Scoullar's side have been competitive for most of the season, but they have scraped together wins in games they needed to lock down and have been exposed when the game has opened up against some of the bigger teams in the Southern League.
Ryan Stewart's Suburbs have been playing an effective 3-4-1-2 system this season, clogging up the centre of the field and playing very direct football out wide where they have some speedy, direct wingers.
Back the Suburbs to score, but not to coast
The Royals are more patient in their build-up and selective in their pressing, preferring to nick their chances rather than let the game become a free-flowing contest.
There should be a mismatch in styles and it will be up to Nelson to try to stretch the Royals' back line early as their best chance of causing a problem.
In the Royals' 2-0 win over Christchurch United last weekend, Connor Neil provided their creative edge while Kazik Swain and Max Davidson added some bite in midfield.
Johnny Reynolds is the spark Nelson have up front, chipping in with a goal in the 6-0 rout and playing a bigger role in their attacking rhythm as the season goes on.
Lennon Whewell is the focal point, however, providing a sharp finish to Nelson's high-tempo wing play, while Ben Polak and Noah Platt add another dimension in terms of bite and end-product in midfield.
Nelson should win this one if they can stretch the Royals' back line early and then use their superior pace on the counterattack to create chances.
Sam Drake is the organiser at the back for Dunedin and his reading of the game will be key as his side will likely have to sit deep and absorb pressure at times on Sunday.
But the odds-on odds for goals looks a bit generous, so we're going for Over 2.5 at 1.27 and Both Teams to Score - Yes at 1.31, which also fits a lively derby script more suited to a 2-1 type result than a walkover.
