Northern to win and keep Wanaka at arm’s length
Northern AFC have won both Southern/National League South head-to-head meetings with Wanaka AFC and look likely to secure another victory when the teams face off in Wanaka again on Saturday. Northern's back-to-back 2-0 and 3-0 wins in the league this season against Wanaka put them in the driver's seat in the regional rivalry, with Wanaka's last notable win in the H2H coming in a 6-3 thriller back in 2019.
The odds accurately reflect the respective form of the teams going into this game with Northern the 1.39 favourites, Wanaka the 5.75 outsiders and the draw priced at 4.8. That's as it should be as Northern are currently occupying a top-half spot around fifth in the Southern/National League South with around 16 points on the board, whereas Wanaka are languishing at the bottom with just six points and a huge gap to make up in the goal difference race.
This will be a block versus break clash and Northern's style is to invite the pressure and then break with their compact and efficient counters. Wanaka are compact in their play, as long as they can keep the back four in a block, and they look to play diagonally before switching the ball through the middle, where they are more likely to hurt the opposition.
Wanaka’s defence is leaking badly
Thomas Van Hees' team has tried to hold a compact shape with their style, but the last five competitive games have seen them slip into freefall, going from a disastrous 0-6 away at Nelson Suburbs, followed by a 0-5 thrashing at Ferrymead Bays, a 0-2 home defeat to Nomads United and a 1-2 reverse at Selwyn United.
Wanaka's most recent result was a 2-1 win over South City Royals, but that run of scorelines screams defensive collapse for them, as they appear unable to stay in shape once the first goal is scored. Northern's Arran Wilkinson has been doing a fantastic job and his pragmatic approach has turned them into the sort of team that is difficult to play against.
Jonathan Tucker is their backbone in goal and his clean-sheet record underpins all of Northern's tight wins in this run. Luke Williams has provided the steel to keep the block tight and Alexander Dale and Sam Cosgrove have added the punch in the transition from defence to attack, but what makes them so dangerous is that they don't rely on a big goal-scorer, rather they share the goals around within a small, but useful group.
Wynn Skinner provides a threat from set-piece situations and will be Wanaka's best chance to get into the game with his ability to pick a pass from the back and get his players a chance. With the cold and clear winter conditions in Wanaka, this will suit Northern's more physical style more and should add bite to what is likely to be a cagey affair.
Northern to get the job done
Our main selection will be Northern to simply get the job done and win on Saturday. The correct score selection could be for an Over 2.5 goals bet at 1.28, but we will go for Northern to beat the spread in the win-and-BTTS market with the selection being Northern to win with both teams not to score at 2.53.
Wanaka have been beaten badly in recent weeks and Lennon Whewell and Ben Polak will be their best bet for nicking a goal, so their quality in the final third will be key to them getting something out of the fixture.
