- Moreton City have the firepower to trouble any defence in NPL Queensland, where they have scored in the mid-30s this season, but have been porous at the back in a number of games, including a 5-2 home defeat to Brisbane City and a 4-3 win over Olympic FC.
- Eastern Suburbs have one of the best defences in the division, but they can also produce impressive offensive outbursts, as the 6-1 win over Rochedale Rovers and the 3-1 away win at Brisbane Roar II show.
- Both teams have been close to the top of the table throughout the NPL Queensland 2026 campaign, with Moreton City on 24 points from 12 matches and Eastern Suburbs on 21 from 11 games.
Lively clash expected in Brisbane
With the weather expected to be clear and mild in Brisbane on Friday, this should be an open game between two of the top teams in NPL Queensland 2026. Moreton City Excelsior have won three and drawn one of their last four head-to-heads with Eastern Suburbs and thrashed the Red Suburbs 3-0 in March 2026.
Cameron Millar’s side has been the talk of the league this year because of their high-octane, attack-minded philosophy that is summed up by Seita Murai’s prolific attacking season in midfield. The Japanese international is on double figures for the season and is supported by Declan Smith and Kenshin Takagishi, who provide a good amount of goals and assists in their own right.
Moreton City’s last four games have included a 6-0 win, a 4-3 win, a 2-5 defeat and a goalless draw, which shows the sort of games they get involved in. The 3-4-1-2 or 3-5-2 system employed by Millar features very aggressive wing-backs, lots of pressing and rapid transitions, but it does sacrifice some defensive solidity.
Eastern are in good form and have more control
David Booth’s Eastern Suburbs team is a very different prospect, but they have also got the formula for a successful NPL team this season with a good mix of youth development and pragmatic, midfield-driven football.
Eastern play in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 formation with Matthew Ridenton, who won team-of-the-season honours, the engine of their team. The Red and Golds are more likely to control a game by keeping possession and playing at a measured tempo, but they are capable of turning on the style when the occasion demands it.
Eastern are unbeaten in their last five NPL Queensland games with two wins and three draws and they recently hammered Rochedale Rovers 6-1 before beating Brisbane Roar II 3-1 away from home. Supporting attackers have stepped up recently to provide ammunition for their forwards and Eastern’s goals return has picked up over the last month.
Goals likely in top-of-the-table clash
Both teams to score is heavily favored at 1.27 for Friday’s clash. The 2.28 odds on Eastern Suburbs are fair enough as they are unbeaten in their last five league matches and at home, but the same goes for Moreton City’s 2.28, and there’s a case to be made that the draw at 4.25 is more likely.
However, our belief is that these two very different teams will produce an open, attacking game that could go either way. It’s a contest that could be decided by which team controls the midfield and the wide areas, where Moreton City’s wing-backs could be exploited by Eastern’s wide men and where Eastern’s central midfield could be targeted by Moreton’s wingers.
