England looking to set the pace in Group L
England got off to the perfect start in their bid to win the FIFA World Cup 2026 on Tuesday, thrashing Croatia 4-2 in a pulsating Group L fixture and taking a deserved three points. With Ghana also recording a 1-0 win over Panama in the other game in the group, they trail the Three Lions on goal difference, and Tuesday's fixture could prove pivotal in the race to the knockout stages.
Thomas Tuchel was appointed as England manager in January 2025 and has clearly had an immediate impact on the Three Lions, who have been playing with an aggressive pressing style and a tactical flexibility that many other nations can't match. The former Bayern Munich boss has instilled a fluid system which has allowed England to play with pace through the middle and out wide, and they should have the firepower to get past the Ghanaian defence.
Ghana, on the other hand, are all about organisation. Carlos Queiroz took charge in April 2026 and has overseen a rigid, compact defensive setup which aims to get players back in position before the opponents can exploit the turnovers. The pace they have out wide should help them to make the most of the counter-attacking opportunities they get.
Back England to outgun Ghana
This game looks like a classic press-versus-counter clash, with England looking to break down the compact Ghanaian side and the Black Stars looking to pounce on any overcommitment from the European side. With an in-form Harry Kane leading the line, England have more than enough quality to do the damage on Tuesday.
Kane has notched two goals in the World Cup so far and has scored three of England's last nine goals, with Phil Foden's creativity and Bukayo Saka's pace adding extra spark to Tuchel's attack. Ghana's main threat is Caleb Yirenkyi, who notched the winner against Panama in their opener and has two of Ghana's last four goals, while Brandon Thomas-Asante adds flair to their attack after registering one assist in his first game.
Tuchel's Three Lions can run rampant
Ghana have failed to win any of their last four away fixtures, drawing one and losing three, so England will be confident of extending their winning run. The heavy odds of 1.22 on the favourites may turn a few punters away, but there's a huge amount of value in the 5.5 draw price. I'd be tempted to take it in this one.
However, I am backing England to take all three points in what should be a relatively straightforward match. With Tuchel's system clicking and England's attack playing with confidence, I'm backing the Over 2.5 goals market at 1.7.
