- Sporting CP are unbeaten in their last five matches in all competitions (W4, D1), a run which includes a 2 - 1 win over PSG and a 3 - 2 away win at Athletic Club in the Champions League
- FK Bodø/Glimt are on a fairy-tale run in the 2025-2026 Champions League, having defeated Manchester City 3 - 1 at home and knocked Inter out 5 - 2 on aggregate in the previous round
- The bookies cannot separate these sides with both available at the same price ahead of this first leg, suggesting a very even contest is expected
Bodø and Sporting are playing in a class of their own
Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League 2025-2026 first leg between FK Bodø/Glimt and Sporting Clube de Portugal should be an epic encounter between two sides that are playing in a league of their own domestically. The Norwegian champions have strolled to the top of the Eliteserien with their high-octane style, while Sporting are right in the mix in a two-horse race for the Portuguese title.
The bookies are in agreement that this first-leg clash is too close to call with both sides available at 2.52 ahead of the game, which is a very fair reflection of the balance of power between these two exciting clubs. The draw is available at 3.6 and should probably be a touch shorter for a game that could be won by either side.
Kjetil Knutsen’s club have brought a revolution to European football with their ultra-direct brand of high-tempo football that features vertical overloads and pressing all over the pitch. It may leave them open at the back at times, but the space they create behind the opposing defence has been a winning formula, especially in the Champions League.
Bodø have history on their minds
The Norwegians stunned Manchester City 3 - 1 at home in the last round with another star performance by talisman Kasper Høgh, who opened and closed the scoring against the Citizens. Høgh has been consistently delivering in big Champions League nights.
Bodø’s wide attackers, including Hauge and Blomberg, all chip in with goals while Sondre Fet and Sondre Sørli provide a creative spark and some goals from midfield too. Add to that Hauge and Blomberg pressing the opposition’s defence all over the field and it is easy to see why Bodø have recorded such historic European upsets.
Sporting, who travel to the Arctic unbeaten in their last five, have a very different tactical philosophy and will be looking to get their hands on the ball and control the game. Rui Borges has organised his players into a back-three and with Gonçalo Inácio and Ricardo Mangas on the pitch, they have the solidity and discipline to pull off some compact defensive phases.
Sporting have big-game experience
When they do press, they do it in a co-ordinated fashion, which is more about stopping play in the opponent’s half than going all in. Francisco Trincão is a genius at creating chaos as Sporting’s chief creator and the Portugal international has racked up assists, while Luis Javier Suárez leads the line as the club’s primary goal threat, consistently finding the net in league and European fixtures.
This fixture has never occurred before competitively and it will be fascinating to see which of these two contrasting styles comes out on top. Bodo/Glimt’s manic, high-risk approach should suit the electric atmosphere in Aspmyra, where it could give them an edge, while Sporting bring an abundance of big-game temperament and a proven track record in UCL. Back over 2.5 goals at 1.57 should be a smart bet here with a 1-1 correct score bet looking good for a tactical draw.
