An Arctic standoff
A place in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League 2025-2026 is at stake in this two-legged tie between Norway’s surprise package Bodø/Glimt and Sporting CP, the Lisbon giants. The hosts have enjoyed a fairytale season on the European stage in 2026, stunning Manchester City 3-1 at home before knocking out Inter 5-2 on aggregate last time out. A victory over Sporting would make them the first Norwegian team to make it into the last eight of a Champions League campaign.
Kjetil Knutsen has been the mastermind behind Bodø’s attacking revolution, orchestrating their high-octane, ultra-direct 4-3-3 system and inspiring them to a series of historic European upsets. Kasper Høgh has been their talisman, netting a brace against Manchester City before playing a central role in the defeat of Inter, while Sondre Fet and Sondre Sørli provide a creative spark and goals from midfield in a high-tempo system that is always looking to overwhelm opponents.
Rui Borges’ Sporting are having a solid season, combining consistency in a congested Primeira Liga title race with some big European scalps, most notably in their UCL wins against PSG and Athletic Club this term. Sporting have kept things tight with a well-structured back three, with defensive stalwarts Gonçalo Inácio and Ricardo Mangas providing structure and discipline in the big games. Borges’ team are also a creative side, however, with Francisco Trincão in particular providing a constant supply of assists, both in Europe and domestically. Luis Javier Suárez leads the line in Portugal, scoring in both league and European fixtures.
A fascinating tactical battle
This is a fascinating contest between two teams that do things differently, with Glimt’s direct, speedy and risk-taking approach up against Sporting’s positional discipline and structured pressing. Sporting will aim to control the pace of this game, but this could be a high-intensity encounter given the prize on offer, with neither side looking to cede an advantage ahead of the return leg in Lisbon.
Glimt’s high defensive line leaves plenty of space behind the defence and their wide attackers, Hauge and Blomberg in particular, have been able to exploit the gaps in their 4-3-3 system throughout Europe. Sporting have the discipline to cause problems here, but the intensity of the atmosphere in Aspmyra and the Arctic setting of this clash could provide Bodø with a unique home advantage, while the visitors won’t be used to the conditions.
Take an open affair with no clear result edge
Both of these sides are in red-hot form, with Sporting winning four and drawing one of their last five and Bodø winning four of their last five, scoring at least twice in all of them. Over 2.5 goals looks excellent value at 57/100, while the result markets at 38/25 for both teams, and 13/5 for the draw, represent a dead heat contest.
The hosts will be full of confidence after their wins over both City and Inter, but Sporting arrive on a five-match unbeaten run and claimed a 2-1 scalp over PSG at the start of the month. We’re going with the draw, or a 1-1 scoreline, as the best value play here, but there’s no clear advantage to either side in this first-leg standoff.
