Foals can’t make a case for a visit to Hamburg
Hamburger SV come into their Friday night Bundesliga 26-27 clash with Borussia Monchengladbach in mixed-to-shaky form having won three and lost two of their last five competitive matches, but the hosts are currently on a two-game losing streak.
A 1-0 home victory against VfB Stuttgart was followed by a 1-0 defeat away to SC Paderborn 07, while HSV were also beaten 1-3 at home by Eintracht Frankfurt in the DFB Pokal last time out. At 11th with nine points from seven games, Die Rothosen are having a much better season than Gladbach, who sit bottom of the table in 18th with just three points from their seven matches.
Gladbach have been in mixed form themselves with two wins, one draw and two defeats in their last five, although they have won their last two games. A 1-2 home defeat to Hoffenheim was followed by a 2-3 away victory over VfB Stuttgart, while Gladbach edged past Karlsruher SC 2-0 at home in the DFB Pokal.
Stalemate could be on the cards
The last two Bundesliga head-to-heads finished level, including a 0-0 draw at Volksparkstadion nine months ago, which seems to make a draw a real runner at 3.7 when HSV are favourites at 2.38 ahead of Gladbach at 2.64.
Merlin Polzin has set up HSV in a compact, structure-first shell with a back three, making them difficult to play against in a similar way to how Gladbach have been when they have been at their best under Alexander Blessin. Die Fohlen play a higher-tempo style, but Alexander Blessin has pushed the Foals towards a more pressing, fast and vertical game.
That should lead to a clash of control vs chaos on Friday night and we're going to side with HSV's compact block to blunt Gladbach's press. The visitors have more tempo and that gives them a live chance to nick this if HSV's backline are caught out on the counter-attack, but the home edge looks the more likely outcome for the win markets.
Go for goals at Volksparkstadion
HSV have conceded six goals in their three Bundesliga 2026/2027 home fixtures this term, so they aren't perfect at the back; we're backing goals at 1.55 and BTTS at 1.48.
Nicolas Capaldo remains HSV's biggest goal threat this campaign with one Bundesliga goal in four appearances, but Albert Groenbaek has added some spark with two assists in the same number of league games. Hugo Bolin leads the Gladbach scoring charts with two Bundesliga goals in four games and looks their sharpest option in the final third.
