- Manchester City have dominated the head-to-head in recent meetings across all competitions, including a 1-0 Premier League win over Southampton on 26 October 2024.
- Manchester City are on a winning streak, with a string of dominant wins in recent matches in all competitions, while Southampton are unbeaten in five (W3, D2).
No stone unturned in City’s pursuit of silverware
The allure of Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final between Manchester City and Southampton is the classic David vs Goliath story, with the visitors sitting in the Championship playoff places and being the massive underdogs according to all major bookmakers.
Pep Guardiola’s City are favourites at around 1.25 with bookmakers, and rightly so, as they have dominated the head-to-head record between the clubs over the last few years, with the most recent meeting a 1-0 win in October.
Guardiola’s men have been on a red-hot streak of late, and their most recent performance was an emphatic quarter-final success in the FA Cup.
City’s rotational depth should hold firm
The Citizens currently sit second in the table with 64 points from 31 games, with a game in hand on the leaders, firmly in the title race.
City have rotated their backline a little due to injuries to Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol, and this could affect their stability at set pieces on Saturday.
However, the strength of City’s squad is such that their form has not suffered from rotation, and they can still get the better of most teams in the country. Phil Foden has been their creative spark, capable of moments of magic even when rotated, and Bernardo Silva and Kevin De Bruyne, if fit, are the playmakers to watch for.
Saints are capable of upsetting the applecart
Erling Haaland is still City’s main outlet for goals this season and the big Norwegian is always a threat in the bigger games, such as this Wembley semi-final. So, while City should get the result and progress to yet another domestic final, don’t rule out Southampton’s cup spirit keeping things interesting.
Tonda Eckert has been a revelation at St Mary’s, instilling a solid, physical and compact playing style to Saints that have seen them embark on an unbeaten run in all competitions since the start of December 2025. They are the only team left in the cup from outside the Premier League and would make history as the first non-Premier League team to make a final since 2008 with a win.
Armstrong and Archer are the main attacking outlets for the Saints, with the former’s clinical finishing and the latter’s pace required to make it through a testing FA Cup run. Midfielders Finn Azaz and Shea Charles are equally important, providing creativity, set-piece quality and defensive grit.
Over 2.5 goals the obvious play
While City are rightly favourites for the win, the Over 2.5 goals market (1.38) makes the most sense as far as the match result markets go, as we expect City to control the game and rack up the goals in a high-scoring manner.
