- Newcastle have drawn their last two, 1-1 at home to Macarthur FC and 2-2 away to Central Coast Mariners in the A-League 2026/2027.
- The Jets have won two of the last three head-to-heads but won 4-1 at home in the A-League 2025/2026.
- Wellington have won three of their last five matches, losing two, and have three points from one A-League 2026/2027 game.
Wellington are in better form, but that may not be enough
Wellington Phoenix will arrive at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday with a better record than their hosts so far, taking three points from their only A-League 2026/2027 fixture, to Newcastle's two from two games, but the early season table is not an accurate guide for this clash.
The Jets have drawn their two A-League 2026/2027 games so far and are 6th in the table, while the Nix are 3rd after their 2-1 win over Melbourne Victory in their only fixture.
That win over Victory was their second in three matches, the other being a 2-1 home win over Western Sydney Wanderers, and their only recent away loss was a 4-0 defeat at Macarthur FC. So while the visitors are in much better form, Newcastle can make a case for themselves as the 2.02 favourites for this game as they are unbeaten at home in the A-League 2026/2027, drawing one from one and posting a 1.00 goals-for, 1.00 goals-against average on their own turf.
An open game on the cards
Mark Milligan has instilled a high-tempo, attack-first way of playing in Newcastle that is built on wide runners and a counter-pressing game to force turnovers in the top third. This will not be a boring game if Newcastle execute their plan as they should see plenty of the ball, but Chris Greenacre has brought a tight, fight-first structure to Wellington that can be a bit more pragmatic and will transition well when they win possession on the break with the ability of their creative midfielders.
Both teams to score looks the sharper angle for this contest at 1.45 with over 2.5 goals at 1.5 also a fit given the nature of the clash. Across five home head-to-heads, Newcastle average 2.0 goals while the Nix average 1.3 as visitors in this fixture. The Jets have a slight edge, two of the last three meetings have been won by them and Newcastle are unbeaten at home in this comp but the Nix's recent form makes this look a bit closer than a home walkover and we'll take them to edge the match on the road.
Newcastle's Nikolaos Vergos has been a great outlet for them in recent weeks, scoring two of his team's six goals in their last five fixtures. He could be the key for them on Saturday.
