Knights have edge in top-of-the-table tussle
Melbourne Knights are slight favourites when they travel to Northcote City in a tight NPL Victoria 2 title battle on Friday, but the Knights' odds are too short for us to take them head-to-head.
The Knights are 2.38 ahead of Northcote City at 2.42 and the draw at 3.58 for what is a near-even game in which anything could happen.
Northcote City's results have been mixed lately, but they have been lively in their last five, winning three and losing two. They lost 2-1 away to North Geelong Warriors, then beat North Sunshine Eagles SC 2-0 away from home and finally lost 3-2 at home to Melbourne Srbija last time out.
Knights have also had two wins, one draw and two defeats in their last five, but their two most recent results fit a pattern of bouncing back quickly after losing. They lost 2-0 to Melbourne Srbija away from home before bouncing back to beat Bulleen Lions 3-1 at home.
Northcote have the ball and Knights have the transition
This game looks like it could be a classic battle between a possession-based side and a team that are more transition-oriented. Max Clarke's Northcote City team play the ball well and can stretch opposition defences with overlapping full-backs and a central number 10 who is the hub of their attacking play.
They can be really effective when they get their game going, but their late loss at home to Melbourne Srbija showed they are open to being nicked in transition by the counter-attacking visitors.
Knights are the type of side to do that. Michael Calandrella's men are more pragmatic than their opponents and have a good shape, which should allow them to sit deep and counter. Their defensive block is good and the second balls they win will be quickly turned into fast breaks.
Both teams to score looks a good fit
Both sides have solid goals-per-game averages for this division and both teams to score at 1.46 looks a decent play here, as does Over 2.5 goals at 1.53, which suggests an open game with the visitors pushing the pace.
The last meeting in NPL Victoria 2 2026 came three months ago when Knights made a statement by thrashing Northcote City 3-0 at home. While this game is expected to be a tight, tense and important contest between two top teams, the hosts don't have the same incentive as Knights do to push for the win and that's why we're backing the visitors by the skin of our teeth.
