Two solid VPL2 outfits meet on Saturday
Goulburn Valley Suns head into their VPL2 2026 away clash at Nunawading City in good form and a near spot-on position in the ladder at around 39 points from 18 games compared to the hosts' 22 from the same number of fixtures.
The Suns are a compact, transition-first side that keep it compact and look to hit fast through the channels. They sit narrow and prefer to play transition football rather than dominating, so their approach is to get bodies behind the ball and hit teams quickly through the channels or via a set-piece when the opportunity arises. Craig Carley is their talisman, a big, powerful and clever forward who looks every bit the talismanic player for his team.
Steve Voursoukis' Nunawading City are also a good side, but they like to keep the ball, press high and get men forward and look to hit teams with pace out wide in a 4-3-3 system. That should make for some intriguing moments as possession against counter looks like the obvious game plan for this fixture.
Suns have had Nunawading’s number in 2026
The H2H is quite compelling in this instance, with Goulburn Valley Suns winning 2-0 on 28 Mar 2026, 2-1 on 14 Jun 2025 and 3-1 on 08 Mar 2025. These games have obviously been a bit Suns-heavy and Nunawading will want to go back to the drawing board after those losses, but this fixture has also produced a 3-3 draw and 3-1 win for the home side in the recent series.
That tells us that this could still be close, even if the Suns are the much likelier winner here. Over 2.5 goals looks short at 1.35 and BTTS - Yes at 1.46 is just about fair given how many goals have flown in between these two in recent times. Goulburn have looked the more clinical side in the final third and at this stage of the season, Nunawading's backline has been leaking too many goals to really fancy them here, despite their cup run.
Back the Suns to get it done
Nunawading will have their moments and their best chance of getting a result is if the attacking unit come together as they did in the cup, but the Suns have been getting it done in VPL2 in May and June, mixing wins and draws. We believe a 1-2 or 0-2 Suns result is the smartest way to play this game, although we do expect Nunawading to make a contest of it.
The Suns' odds of 1.45 are very fair in comparison to Nunawading's price of 5.22, with the draw at 4.5 a big disappointment.
