Wolves can test the hosts’ mettle in close contest
NWS Spirit FC U20 are enjoying a decent season in the NPL New South Wales U20, but so are Wollongong Wolves FC U20 - and the two teams are neck-and-neck in the league. Spirit are perhaps just a little bit ahead in the table, sitting 4th-5th with 35 points from approximately 19 games, while the Wolves are perhaps 6th with 31 points from the same number of games.
And while Spirit are the favourites with the bookies at 1.97, the Wolves are a shade under 2 to 1 and the draw is 3.9, suggesting this is a very tough game to call. With the points gap small, Spirit could use this as a launchpad for a top-end finish, while the Wolves need a statement win to put pressure on the top three.
Sergio Malfara's Spirit side are a club-wide attacking set-up with many of the players seemingly comfortable with the ball and able to press in a high-paced, front-three system. Jett Kaines and Zayne Ahluwalia have been among the names to pop up regularly in the offensive zone in recent matches, but it's been a real team effort with Spirit scoring multiple goals in many of their recent matches.
Wolves have been more of a controlled, patient, possession-based team, as you'd expect with Luke Wilkshire as the most recognisable face of the club. The match reports back their matches up pretty well as the Wolves are rarely in a mess, they like to play through the thirds and they are selective in their pressing, preferring to maintain a structured setup rather than pressing the full-court all the time.
Spirit’s form lines favour a home win
With the home side arriving in much the better form with five straight wins, taking a narrow NWS Spirit win at 1.97 is the safest selection in the outright market for Saturday's game. That run of victories has included a 3-2 home success over St George City, a 4-2 win at Sydney Olympic and a 2-1 away victory against Sydney FC.
The Wolves are a stubborn team that are hard to break down, but they have also drawn a few too many in their recent run of results, with 1-1 draws against Sydney FC and APIA Leichhardt and a 5-1 win over St George Saints. Lucas Trajcevski, Sebastian Hernandez and Alex Masciovecchio have all been involved in goals and lineups on a regular basis for the Wolves, which gives them a bit of a spark in possession.
This fixture has a history of being a tight contest, with the sides even on wins and draws since the beginning of 2023, so Spirit's recent run of form is the key factor in my opinion. Over 2.5 goals and Both Teams to Score - Yes both look appealing at 1.27 for Over 2.5 and 1.28 for Both Teams to Score, but the head-to-head means a draw is a live possibility if the Wolves can keep it tidy.
