- Real Madrid and Man City have a 5-5 all-time UEFA record, with just one goal separating their goal tallies (City 26, Madrid 25)
- Real are 2nd in La Liga on 63 points from 27 games, just behind Barca
- City are 2nd in the Premier League, about seven points behind Arsenal with a game in hand
Modern-day rivals set to deliver a cracking game
Real Madrid will face Manchester City in the most recent addition to the modern UEFA Champions League classics on Wednesday when the European heavyweights square off at the Bernabéu.
The latest episode of this 21st century saga has all the potential to produce as much drama, goals and heartbreak as recent meetings which have included a 3-3 thriller in Madrid and a 1-1 stalemate at the Etihad in April 2024 that Real Madrid won on penalties. City won the group stage meeting 2-1 in December 2025 and drubbed Carlo Ancelotti’s side 4-0 in the last four of 2023/24, so Pep Guardiola’s side will be favourites again at 2.0 with Real Madrid at 3.3 and the draw at 3.75.
It seems an impossible task to pick a winner on the night and perhaps over the two legs, but we will take a chance on the draw in the correct score market because these two clubs are so evenly matched. Arbeloa, who has done a fine job since taking over as Real Madrid boss in January, is entering his first major European knockout as the man in charge while Guardiola is looking for further milestones in his never-ending pursuit of his sporting legacy.
City to dominate possession and press in numbers
The match could be a tactical chess game with City set to dominate the ball in their hybrid 4-3-3 system that morphs into a 3-2-5 when they attack. Guardiola’s team will press in the numbers, using their central overloads, inverted full-backs and coordinated pressing to control the game’s tempo.
Real have gone back to a more pragmatic approach under Arbeloa, who favours a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 that gets bodies back quickly and allows them to hit on the counter-attack when they can. Rodrygo’s season-ending knee injury was a massive blow to their forward line as they had to rotate the squad and shuffle players into new positions in his absence.
Kylian Mbappe is Madrid’s best and only reliable goalscorer in both La Liga and the Champions League this term and his availability for the game is one of the biggest stories of the first leg. If fit, he makes Los Blancos a far more potent force than a team that has seen Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni step up in his recent absence.
O’Reilly and Doku can unlock Madrid
Erling Haaland leads the Premier League scoring charts, and his fitness is being carefully managed by Guardiola’s staff for this clash. If the Norwegian striker is fit, City will come in as slight favourites to win the tie, but his absence should even the odds a little.
Nico O’Reilly has been a revelation as a playmaker for City and can unlock defences with his vision and passing, while the likes of Jeremy Doku and Rodri can also hurt teams when in the mood.
The ‘BTTS - Yes’ market is a heavy favourite here at 1.5, which makes it an obvious play given the attacking talent on both sides. But we will swerve the odds-on price and back a close first-leg draw, which could be decided at the home of the away side on the second leg.
