- Real Madrid and Manchester City have played out some of the modern era’s greatest Champions League ties since 2023
- The all-time UEFA head-to-head record is perfectly balanced at five wins apiece and five draws with only a single goal between the clubs (City 26, Madrid 25)
- City have a slight edge at 1/1 with Madrid at 23/10 and the draw at 11/4 for Wednesday’s first leg
City are on a winning streak
Manchester City can take a first-leg lead into the second leg at the Bernabéu on Wednesday when they take on Real Madrid, who are in second place in LaLiga with 63 points from 27 matches, just behind Barcelona.
Álvaro Arbeloa, appointed in January, has led his new team to four wins in five games as Los Blancos have learned to play a new way.
They are a much more pragmatic side than before with a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 set-up and a transition focus that is the antithesis of Manchester City’s possession-based and pressing gameplan.
Guardiola's hybrid 4-3-3 system, that morphs into a 3-2-5 system when in possession, has seen Manchester City dominate many games this season with central overloads, inverted full-backs and coordinated pressing ensuring they set the tempo of the match.
Guardiola and Arbeloa’s match-up has all the ingredients to be a classic
His side are unbeaten in their last five with four wins and a 2-2 away draw at Nottingham Forest thrown in. They were not at their best against Leeds last weekend, but still managed to win 1-0 with the young Nico O’Reilly coming to life as a dynamic force in the centre of the park.
Jude Bellingham has been the creative force behind Madrid’s best work this term with his runs from deep and late surges into the box a constant threat to opponents. But they have lost Rodrygo to a season-ending knee injury and that has forced Arbeloa to adjust to the loss of the Brazilian’s directness.
Federico Valverde and Aurélien Tchouaméni have stepped up with goals in Madrid’s last two games. Kylian Mbappé remains the top scorer in both LaLiga and the Champions League, but his fitness for this tie will be crucial with City and Guardiola likely to target him.
City’s attacking options are deep
City won the 2023/24 Semi-final tie against Real Madrid 4-0 and beat them 2-1 in the group stage in December 2025. Pep Guardiola’s side are second in the Premier League, about seven points behind Arsenal but holding a game in hand and cannot afford to drop any points in their remaining fixtures.
Erling Haaland leads the Premier League scoring charts and his fitness is being carefully managed to ensure he is at his peak for this clash. The matchup of City’s controlled style and Madrid’s reactive, transition-heavy gameplan with lots of directness and tempo should be fascinating if the two best players on the planet are fit.
The Bernabeu has seen some classics in recent years and this has the feel of another one. Backing Both Teams to Score - Yes at 1/2 is certainly the play here as both sides have an array of attacking talent that can make the difference. A tight first-leg draw is likely as City have a lot to prove with a long journey home in the second-leg looming at the Etihad.
