Knights have depth but Roos are ruthless
Two of the best U23 sides in the NPL Queensland competition meet on Sunday when Rochedale Rovers host Gold Coast Knights in a match with real title-race implications.
Rochedale are second on the ladder on around 32 points from 14 games with Gold Coast Knights hot on their tail on approximately 28 points. Both have been impressive in their own ways, but it's the home team who have the head-to-head advantage after they defeated their opponents 4-0 in the NPL Queensland U23 on 11 April 2026.
The Knights had won the earlier reverse fixture 4-3 on 15 March 2024, so it has swung both ways and these two will be evenly matched again when the match comes around. Rochedale are the 2.04 favourites with Gold Coast Knights 2.8 and the draw at 3.94.
Rochedale’s game model is to press and score
The Roos play with real structure under Scott MacNicol, who has the side transitioning quickly from defence to attack and playing with plenty of tempo. Midfielder Quinn MacNicol, a Young Socceroos-selected midfielder, has the squad playing with a real edge to their play in possession while his own play is the key factor in their transition moments.
He is a headliner on the pitch and in the squad, but Rochedale's youngsters are full of energy and structure with the likes of Cooper McCormack, Harry Talbot and Jack Collins providing enough solidity to let the likes of MacNicol fly. They've played some good sides this year and their last five competitive games have seen them draw 3-3 with Lions, beat Magic United 10-0, Peninsula Power 2-0, Gold Coast United 1-1 and Olympic 1-0.
The 10-0 demolition of Magic United in the NPL Queensland U23 is a warning that the Roos have a ruthless streak in them and can run the score when they get the chance.
Knights have structure and can hit back
The Knights aren't that far behind the leaders in the table but have been pretty solid rather than spectacular, so we're expecting a tight, high-tempo affair on Sunday. Gold Coast have beaten Magic 3-1, Lions 1-0, Olympic 5-2 and Peninsula 2-0 in the NPL Queensland U23 before their 4-1 defeat to Eastern Suburbs.
Scott McDonald and Alex Morrison have developed a club with some real depth and structure in the youth ranks. Their U23s play a patient 4-2-3-1 system that plays off the quality of a central creator while their wide players provide a running threat.
Max King and Dominic Scott are just two of the players in the wider group that can hurt teams on their day and their recent 4-1 defeat at Eastern Suburbs shows they can be caught off guard when the press is broken.
There will be goals in this game but Rochedale's firepower at home should see them nick it. So, there's plenty to go with Over 2.5 goals at 1.33 and BTTS at 1.33, but BTTS is the better option. A 2-1 home win looks the most natural pick in the correct score market.
