Tight first leg expected in Braga
SC Braga and Real Betis will face off for the first time in UEFA competition when they meet in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League in 2025/26, a fixture that sets the stage for an intriguing clash of Portuguese and Spanish contenders.
Carlos Vicens’ hosts are one of the more progressive teams in European football, preferring to play proactive, flexible attacking football and capable of high-pressing and overloading the wings in a 3-4-2-1 or 3-5-2 system. Vicens’ tactical tinkering appears to have been the catalyst for Braga’s comeback against Ferencváros in the last round when they came from 2-0 behind to go through after a 4-0 home win.
Real Betis have a completely different style and are led by one of the most experienced and successful managers in European club football, Manuel Pellegrini. Betis will play in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 and focus on keeping possession and staying compact when out of possession. They will look to take their time, use their full backs to provide width and try and overload the centre of the pitch with their midfielders. Pressing is selective and designed to create, rather than win the ball back.
The hosts are available at 2.46, compared to Betis at 2.74, which seems a bit on the skinny side for a game where the draw is well priced at 3.35. That’s because the matchup of Braga’s aggressive, transition-heavy game against Betis’ more measured, possession-based approach should see both teams trying to take the match by the scruff of the neck in order to grab the advantage ahead of the return leg.
The BTTS Yes bet is at 1.7 and suggests that both teams can create enough to score and take control of this two-legged tie with an away goal on the road, or a home goal on Wednesday night.
Goals on the cards
Braga’s home crowd and unique atmosphere should give the hosts the mental edge in this clash, especially given their dramatic comeback against the Hungarians in the previous round. A draw looks the likeliest result, but Betis should have enough attacking quality to at least come away with a 1-1 draw. Braga have scored at least two goals in four of their last five games, including their 2-2 draw with Sporting CP and a 4-0 win in Europe.
Lukáš Horniček has been a solid keeper and has kept enough clean sheets to give Braga a solid platform to play with. The likes of Ricardo Horta and Rodrigo Zalazar will be the key attacking players, while the visitors have the likes of Juan Hernández and Antony in their ranks, both with 7 - 8 goals in all competitions, not to mention the creative spark of Pablo Fornals and Abde Ezzalzouli.
Betis have been a touch inconsistent in LaLiga of late, suffering defeats to Getafe and Athletic Club and a stalemate with Celta, but they have shown in this competition that they can turn it on, especially with a place in the semi-finals at stake.
Backing BTTS Yes, therefore, is the best bet for Wednesday’s game with Braga’s captain, Ricardo Horta, a reliable source of goals and assists, while Isco’s potential return for the visitors adds a new dimension to their attacking threat.
