An historic quarter-final for Portugal and Spain
SC Braga and Real Betis will meet for the first time in UEFA competition as they contest a Europa League 2025/26 quarter-final on Wednesday, a new high-water mark for both clubs.
The hosts are enjoying good momentum in both domestic and European competitions, while Betis are on a run in the cups, having thrashed Panathinaikos 4-0 in Seville after a narrow first-leg loss.
Carlos Vicens’ tactics were key to Braga’s comeback against Ferencváros, who had beaten them 2-0 in Hungary. Braga are a proactive, flexible outfit, who play with a 3-4-2-1 or 3-5-2 system and overload the flanks with wing-backs, while the wingers and number tens play a second wave of transition football.
Braga will make their move based on a trigger and then press high up the pitch to recover the ball quickly. Ricardo Horta is their star attacker, but Rodrigo Zalazar has been their most effective player this season, contributing more goals and chances than anyone else in the squad, with top xG and xA numbers.
Real Betis have plenty of attacking options
Betis are more compact and patient, operating from a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3, while Manuel Pellegrini’s side prefers to control possession, using full-backs to create width and midfielders to move in and out of central areas to open up the opposition defence.
Pellegrini’s experience in continental football is key for a club that is inconsistent in the league but reliable in the knockout rounds. Betis have had two tough games at Getafe and Athletic Club and drew with Celta.
However, a 4-0 win against Panathinaikos shows they can hit their stride in Europe, while Isco’s potential return from injury adds another dimension to their attack, including Juan Hernández and Antony, both with 7-8 goals in all competitions, plus creative playmakers Pablo Fornals and Abde Ezzalzouli.
Home advantage may see Braga through
Both teams will be desperate to take the lead in this two-leg encounter with a place in the Europa League semi-finals at stake, so every away goal and tactical decision will count.
Braga’s crowd will provide a good atmosphere for what is a special night for the club, so the home side could have a little bit of the psychological advantage, but a draw looks a little too big a price at 47/20 to be of interest, although the odds on the match are very tight - 73/50 Braga to 87/50 Betis, with BTTS Yes at 7/10.
The draw is the best prediction for this game, but a home win by one goal would also be a successful night for Vicens’ side, given how the fixture falls. Braga have been solid at home with Lukáš Horniček keeping several clean sheets and they will have enough to grind it out with Betis, who will have their own ideas on how to make this a close game.
