- Japan have won two and drawn one of their last three away games.
- Tunisia have lost three consecutive matches, conceding 11 goals and scoring once.
- Japan have won four and drawn one of their last five in all competitions.
Japan's quality and cohesion can tell in clash of styles
Japan, priced at 1.5 to win against Tunisia, are rightful favourites to beat the Eagles of Carthage at Monterrey Stadium in this Group F clash and we believe they will get the job done.
Japan are a well-organised, cohesive unit that have been developed by Hajime Moriyasu over a long period in the job and possess the necessary quality to outclass Tunisia on Sunday.
Moriyasu's team play with a fluid back-three and high-intensity wing-backs who press the ball to win it back and control the game's tempo. They have a good attacking threat through Daichi Kamada, who scored in Japan's opening game, and Koki Ogawa, a terrific playmaker who has already racked up one assist in the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Japan played out an excellent 2-2 draw with the Netherlands in their opening game, winning the ball back high up the pitch time and again and making the Oranje work for every yard of space in their half of the field.
Tunisia to sit deep and frustrate Japan
Tunisia, on the other hand, will sit deep in a compact block and try to frustrate their opponents on Sunday. Hervé Renard, appointed on June 16th 2026, has already instilled defensive discipline in his new charges and they will try to counterattack and strike on the break when they win the ball. Renard will set up Tunisia in compact blocks and they will look to cause Japan problems. Hannibal Mejbri is the creative spark in the middle of the park for the Eagles of Carthage and he already has one assist to his name in the FIFA World Cup 2026. Omar Rekik is the main goal threat for Tunisia and scored their only goal of the tournament so far in the 5-1 defeat to Sweden that has left them at the bottom of Group F.
Tunisia's defensive style could lead to a high-scoring affair
Tunisia's defeat to the Swedes was their third in a row across all competitions and this is a worrying development for the team from the North African nation. Japan are unbeaten in their last five in all competitions, having beaten Iceland 1-0 and held the Netherlands to a 2-2 draw in their two Group F games.
Japan, who beat Tunisia 2-0 in Friendly International Matches 2024/2025, have averaged 2.00 goals scored and 2.00 conceded on their travels to date in this campaign. We believe they have enough quality to unlock Tunisia's compact defence on at least two occasions on Sunday, but as Japan will also be desperate to get on the scoresheet, both teams to score is our main play.
The odds for Over 2.5 goals at 2.12 also look too good to ignore and a high-scoring clash between these two in Monterrey cannot be ruled out.
