- Western Sydney Wanderers B (W) have won 4 of their last 5 NPL New South Wales Women's games, scoring 15 goals.
- Illawarra Stingrays (W) have taken 2 points from their last 5 league games, including a 5-1 loss by APIA Leichhardt and a 0-0 draw with Hills United.
Wanderers B on the charge
Western Sydney Wanderers' B side are on the rise in the NPL New South Wales Women's 2026 competition and they can continue their climb towards the finals with a comfortable home win against out-of-form Illawarra on Sunday.
Their academy coaching staff have created a young team with the same DNA as the senior club, playing a front-foot, possession-based style of football that includes proactive pressing and rapid transitions into attack.
The club's academy provides the players and with so many fresh faces each season, many talents combine to make an almost unstoppable attacking force. Talia Younis has established herself as the dynamo in midfield, providing goals and assists, but the ability of the whole team to play at pace and in numbers makes them a handful.
Illawarra’s sting is gone
The Stingrays have been a tough nut to crack at times with coach Steve Gordon's disciplined, defence-first approach keeping them in games until they can be sprung by quick, direct attacks.
Veteran Matildas defender Caitlin Cooper is the glue that holds the defence together and is a major threat from set pieces, while Kaelah Austin is their main outlet in attack. But they have been struggling for goals and points this season and this shows Gordon's strategy isn't working when they face the better sides in the league.
Wanderers’ pressing should prove superior
This fixture is usually quite a good one for Illawarra with each side taking one win and a draw from the three head-to-head clashes since the beginning of 2025. But Western Sydney Wanderers B claimed the 1-0 win when they visited Wollongong back in March 2026.
So many of the academy players in the Wanderers' squad will be desperate to catch the eye of the senior management with their performances and Illawarra's experienced spine of players will be determined to steady the ship and climb the table.
Western Sydney Wanderers B (W) are heavy favourites to win with 1.29 odds, while the Stingrays are long shots at 7.37. The odds accurately reflect the disparity in form and position on the table, but we think the gap in talent and ambition is not that great.
Talia Younis is a game-changer
With home advantage and far superior form, Western Sydney Wanderers B should get the win they need to support their finals ambitions. However, Illawarra have the potential to make it close if Austin can find the net, but the Wanderers' superiority in pressing and pace should still tell.
The over 2.5 goals line is a solid favourite at 1.43, which reflects the recent trend of Wanderers' high-scoring wins.
A potentially cool and showery day in western Sydney could slow the game down and play into Illawarra's direct style, but the Wanderers' pressing and superior pace should enable them to control the tempo and territory.
