- Malvern City have won five consecutive league games, producing high-scoring wins in several of them
- The visitors have the best attack in VPL2 and a strong goal difference advantage
Malvern mean business with Malvern mean city
Malvern City are the runaway leaders of the Victoria Premier League 2 2026 after putting together a five-game winning streak that has seen them beat the best and worst sides in the league, respectively Kingston City (5-0) and Werribee City (1-0 away).
Their 1-0 win at Werribee followed up a 2-1 away win over Whittlesea United, their only meeting this season, with the visitors top of the table with a strong goal difference advantage and a significant points gap to their opponents this Friday.
City’s pressing and tempo has been the key to their success this term and has been described as ‘unplayable’ by several opponents. Boss Fausto De Amicis plays with a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 system, with the full backs bombing forward and the team playing a high-energy, vertical game that can be hard for the opposition to play against.
Gavin De Niese has been in sparkling form in midfield, driving transitions and providing a consistent supply of quality chances for the league’s best attack. Defenders Hamza Kheir and Michael Hornsby have provided balance in this system and the City is well equipped to go into the top tier of Australian football with De Amicis at the helm.
Hosts have been hard to beat, but cannot score
Ivan Franjic has brought some much-needed defensive discipline and structure to Whittlesea United, but they remain firmly in the lower half of the league table, some way behind Malvern on both points and goals scored. The ex-Socceroo boss has certainly made them harder to beat, with the side keeping clean sheets in draws, including a goalless stalemate against Goulburn Valley Suns.
However, they are struggling to score goals and often play in a rigid, compact structure, with their goalkeeper and back four operating as a unit. They have been frustrated by many teams this season, including one that is now top of the league.
The hosts will be hoping that a wet and windy forecast will help them on Friday, with their compact, low block and set-piece threat potentially causing problems for the high-line Malvern on a slippery surface. However, with the odds so stacked against them, it’s hard to go against Malvern City to take the points.
Visitors likely to dominate in attack vs defence clash
It is always a good fixture when a team that presses high and a team that sits deep meet and the clash should provide a gripping spectacle, even if Malvern’s players have to do the majority of the chasing. The odds on the away win at 1.64 seem slightly short, but at 1.49, Over 2.5 goals is a particularly skinny price.
We believe the favourites should have little trouble controlling this game and dominating territory, so a 2-0 or 2-1 away victory seems most likely.
