- Bayern Munich are top-heavy with players who can play at any level in Europe.
- Vincent Kompany has installed a possession-dominant, high-pressing game at Bayern Munich since May 2024.
- Union St.-Gilloise are a compact, counter-attacking side who will try to frustrate before breaking.
Bayern can be ruthless with the ball
FC Bayern Munich are heavy 1/10 favourites to see off Union St.-Gilloise in the UEFA Champions League 2025-2026 on Wednesday and it is difficult to argue with that assessment.
The Bavarians are second in the table on 15 points from a maximum 18, while the Union are all the way down at 27th with just six points from six matches.
Bayern have been in blistering form, winning their last five matches in all competitions, and Union have been so-so, winning two, drawing two and losing one of their last five.
Kompany has certainly made them a possession-dominant side and the manner of their wins and the way they move the ball has changed the identity of the team. The press is aggressive, the build-up play is vertical and they have the best ball-playing centre-halves in the world.
Kompany’s changes are clear
A team that previously struggled to find its rhythm in the final third is now full of attacking flow as they rotate players, press the opponents hard and move the ball quickly from defence to attack.
Jamal Musiala is the best example of how Bayern have become a free-flowing team under Kompany. He breaks the lines with his close control and passes and the team are always looking to get him on the ball.
Leroy Sané’s runs and crossing from deep make him a constant threat, while Harry Kane’s European pedigree has been a talisman for them in the Champions League with five goals in six.
They have been ruthless in Germany, trouncing Wolfsburg 8-1 at home, dispatching Koln 3-1 away and then hammering RB Leipzig 5-1 on the road in their three Bundesliga assignments this month.
Union can be stubborn
Union can be a stubborn opponent, however, with David Hubert’s side being one of the most organised and best-structured sides in Europe since he took over at the start of October 2025.
His men have been difficult to break down and have played some of their best football on their travels. Union have won two and lost only one of their three away matches in the Champions League, so can’t be written off.
Promise David has scored three of their last seven goals and is a clinical finisher up front, while Anan Khalaili is their goal threat in the Champions League with two from six.
Cameron Puertas has the energy and vision to be a real danger from midfield as Union look to break down opponents before moving into their transition game where they are extremely dangerous on the wings and set-pieces.
Over 2.5 goals a good alternative
Union’s ‘Cinderella’ story is an interesting subplot, but the structural difference between these two clubs is evident in the odds and Bayern’s superior talent and Kompany’s tactical evolution are the main reasons to back Bayern to advance.
The Over 2.5 goals at 1/4 option is one to watch in the alternative markets as Bayern should have enough firepower to put this game out of sight. The hosts have conceded only two goals in three home games in this competition, a rate of 0.67 per game, while Union have scored 1.67 and conceded 1.33 per game away from home.
A home win with at least three goals looks likely with Bayern winning three from three at Allianz Arena this season and Union’s scoring and conceding records on the road suggesting they could at least find a goal.
