- Dunfermline lead 1-0 on aggregate after winning the first leg at home.
- Both teams have shared the spoils in 2025-26, with wins, draws and goals, but the two recent play-off legs were cagey.
- Arbroath’s David Gold and Colin Hamilton are co-player-managers in this winner-takes-all clash.
Lennon’s team can get through
Dunfermline can finish off the job and take their Premiership promotion bid to the play-off semi-finals when they face third-placed Arbroath at Gayfield Park on Friday.
Arbroath are slight favourites at 109/100, with the Pars priced at 117/50 and the draw at 49/20. However, the hosts are coming off the back of three consecutive draws and lost the first-leg 1-0 at East End Park, so there is a chance that the hosts could force their way into the next round.
The Pars are unbeaten in their last three, keeping two clean sheets and showing plenty of resolve in the play-offs to grind out a result when they needed to. Neil Lennon’s side play with width and verticality, pressing high and trying to stretch the opposition when they have the ball.
Lennon has shown himself to be a tactically flexible manager who can keep the ball wide and make changes to keep games tight if required.
Arbroath will pack the box
Arbroath will undoubtedly pack the penalty area on Friday with a compact, narrow and physical defensive block and look to get numbers forward whenever they can. Gold and Hamilton are central to their organisation and set-piece routines, providing leadership on the pitch and off it.
The Red Lichties’ recent record of draws and losses suggests they may not have enough to trouble Dunfermline again, although Arbroath’s home record is excellent. With promotion hopes alive, and the winner of this play-off quarter-final keeping their dream alive, it could be a nervous night for everyone at Gayfield.
There are plenty of experienced players on the field for the home side, although their squad has been rotated a bit in recent matches. Findlay Marshall is among the league’s top scorers and will be a threat again for the Red Lichties on Friday.
Pars’ Andrew Tod is the second-highest scorer in the Championship with 13 goals, so the visitors will always pose a threat when they are on the front foot. Matty Todd is another who has done it all for the visitors in the league and cup, popping up with goals and assists from midfield, while Olly Thomas has been a real handful in the Scottish Cup, notching goals, and Chris Kane has been a constant threat down the right.
Lennon’s men should edge it
Given Dunfermline’s one-goal aggregate lead and overall form it is hard to oppose Lennon’s lads here, but the odds for the away side are slightly against them. We will back the home team to at least stay in the tie and leave the door open for a play-off final if they can overturn the deficit.
It might be a bit of a nail-biter if Arbroath have to attack to come from behind on the night, but we will go with the away team to nick it and edge closer to the top flight. The Both teams to score - Yes market is very heavily weighted at 59/100, so we will avoid that despite both sides possessing some serious goal threat and the evidence of two previous firecracker encounters this season (5-0 to Pars and 4-2 to the Lichties).
