- AS Roma have won four and drawn one of their last five games, including a 4-0 home victory over Fiorentina last weekend and a 3-2 away win at Parma before that.
- SS Lazio have won three, drawn one and lost one of their last five outings, a run of results which includes a 3-3 home draw with Udinese, a 2-1 away victory at Cremonese and a 0-3 reverse at home to Inter.
Gasperini’s Roma to go for the jugular in Derby della Capitale
Gian Piero Gasperini has worked wonders with Roma since taking charge in June 2025 and his high-octane 3-4-3 system is beginning to show its teeth. The Wolves system sees the wing-backs push high to overload the opposition’s defence and the midfield players to press and support the front three in attacking areas. Roma have racked up 13 goals in their last five fixtures as a result and talisman Donyell Malen has shown his lethal finishing ability to net six goals in that sequence.
Roma are in good form going into Sunday’s Derby della Capitale as they come into the game on the back of a three-game winning streak and unbeaten in their last three home fixtures. Maurizio Sarri’s SS Lazio are also in good shape with three wins, one draw and one defeat in their last five, but their away form has been inconsistent all season with six wins, six draws and six defeats from their 18 games on the road.
Sarri has a different type of philosophy to Gasperini. Sarriball is all about a patient build-up, ball retention and disciplined pressing to control the tempo of the game. It has worked well at times this season, but Lazio have struggled to find the goal and have averaged 0.78 goals per game scored and 0.72 conceded per game when playing away from home in Serie A this term.
Lazio lack the firepower to win on their own terms
Lazio’s away-day woes could see them come unstuck in this clash against an attacking force such as Roma, who have hit 31 goals in 18 Serie A games at the Stadio Olimpico. Top scorer Gustav Isaksen has just five goals in 29 appearances in the league for Lazio, so Sarri’s men don’t have the quality in attack to win games on their own merits.
Roma have won two of the last three meetings between the clubs and have not lost to Lazio in that time. They won 1-0 on their trip to the Stadio Olimpico seven months ago and Lazio are winless in their last two visits there. The hosts can harness the electric atmosphere inside the cauldron of the capital city and make it count on Sunday.
The home side’s intensity when pressing could disrupt Lazio’s build-up and see Roma profit from the space and turnovers that they will create. Backing Over 2.5 goals at 97/100 and Both Teams to Score - No at 79/100 makes sense for this derby, as a Roma win with Lazio failing to score seems likely.
