- Atlas have been solid on home soil, particularly defensively, but their away form has been less convincing.
- Monterrey have been inconsistent and vulnerable defensively during Nicolás Sánchez’s short reign as interim boss.
- Atlas’ Camilo Vargas has been in excellent form in goal and his defence, particularly at home, has been solid.
Tight encounter likely in Guadalajara
CF Atlas Guadalajara will probably just edge out CF Rayados de Monterrey in what is likely to be a close and tense Liga MX contest on Sunday. Atlas have enough squad depth and quality to get the better of a Monterrey side that have been less than convincing since the departure of Domènec Torrent.
Sánchez has had a tough start to his new role as Rayados boss, although he took charge of the team after a 4-0 win. The 2-3 home defeat to Guadalajara and a 1-2 defeat to Atletico San Luis have followed, so the pressure will be on him to get something from this game.
The stakes are high for both sides as each are still in contention for the Liguilla or play-in places. Atlas have 18 points from 13 Clausura 2026 games and Monterrey have four fewer, so Rayados need a response more.
Atlas’ defence has been a strong platform for them
The game is likely to be won by the team that can make best use of the conditions - which should be warm and dry for the players on a Sunday evening in Guadalajara. Diego Cocca’s men should be better suited to the conditions as they are a defensive-minded team that will try to contain Monterrey’s attacking players and hit on the counter attack.
The hosts play in a compact 5-4-1 or 3-5-2 system, pressing selectively and not over-committing, while Rayados will try to dominate the ball and keep it in the attacking half. This should be an intriguing tactical battle that will be decided by which team is better at transitioning from one system to the other.
It is also likely to be close and probably not a high-scoring game, so it is hard to understand why the bookmakers are taking such big bets on goals with over 2.5 at 83/100 and both teams to score at 13/20. Rayados are slight favorites to win at 28/25, with Atlas at 9/4 and the draw 5/2.
Martial’s fitness will be key for Rayados
Cocca’s insistence on a disciplined approach has made Atlas very tough to break down at Estadio Jalisco where they have ground out narrow wins in Clausura 2026 - including a 3-2 comeback over Atlético San Luis recently. The 1-0 away win at San Luis before that was typical of their style.
Monterrey can be devastating in attack and have some brilliant young players who can do something from nothing, like Germán Berterame and their fleet of young forwards did at Mazatlán in a 5-1 win recently. But they are often caught out at the back and have been for the most part during Sánchez’s brief tenure in charge.
Atlas’ defense, led by Manuel Capasso with the sidelined Rodrigo Schlegel, are disciplined and Vargas is having an outstanding season in goal. Diego González is a penalty taker and set-piece specialist for them while Agustín ‘Toro’ Rodríguez and Eduardo Aguirre have contributed key goals.
Sergio Canales, the creative heart of Rayados, has come through a minor injury crisis to produce a match-winning goal against Toluca a few weeks back and has provided key assists in Clausura action. Anthony Martial is just starting to find his rhythm up front and will be the focal point of their attack if fit.
