- Club América are winless in their last five games (four draws, one defeat) and have only scored three goals in that sequence.
- Toluca have won three of the last five Liga MX and Campeón de Campeones head-to-head meetings, including a 2-0 win over América earlier this season.
- Toluca have beaten América 3-1 in the Campeón de Campeones final and 2-0 at home in this season’s Clausura.
Top-heavy Toluca top of the tree
Toluca, under Antonio ‘Turco’ Mohamed, are the team with more momentum and are in superior form heading into Sunday’s late kick-off clash with Club América in Mexico City, but the bookies have them down as only marginal favourites at 83/50, América are 3/2 and the draw 12/5.
It is a high-stakes encounter that could be settled by one moment of quality, or one moment of madness, as there are just three match days left of Clausura 2026 and these two teams are battling it out for Liguilla seeding.
Toluca will be looking to capitalise on América’s woes
América are on a run of four consecutive draws and a recent defeat that has them sitting 7th on 19 points after 14 matches, while Toluca are 5th on 27 and will be pushing for top seeding if they can maintain the momentum from two recent Concacaf Champions Cup wins.
Turco Mohamed’s men thrashed San Diego FC 4-0 in the last round and are the side with the sharper attack, having scored nine goals in their last five outings. América have only netted three in their same number of games, so there is a clear contrast in the goalscoring.
Paulinho, with six Clausura goals, is the main clinical finisher for Toluca, while América’s top scorer Brian Rodríguez has only hit three league goals from the wing. Toluca have the advantage in the battle of the key men.
Toluca’s team structure trumps América’s possession
This is a classic possession versus structure clash, with both teams in the top seven, as América look to open up Toluca’s lines while Toluca will seek to frustrate and then hurt América on the break.
América play in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 with an emphasis on controlled possession and wide overloads, as they are happy to press teams and set a high tempo in order to dictate terms and turn over opponents. But their chances are suffering in the attacking third at the moment.
Raphael Veiga is the team’s best creator and is also able to keep the tempo of the game high with his movement and intelligent play, while Patricio Salas has chipped in with recent goal contributions.
Toluca set up in a 4-2-3-1, which is a more balanced system in which they will look to dominate the centre of the field and create transitions to hurt the opposition with pace.
Helinho has added pace and penetration to their attack with three goals, while the defensive anchors Luan García and Federico Pereira have been solid - although both could be tested if captain Henry Martín returns from injury.
Turco’s men have been excellent on the counter-attack
Turco has the perfect balance of structure and adventure for his Toluca team and has been rewarded with some excellent results in the Concacaf competition, although they have a league defeat and two draws in their last three domestic matches.
The bookmakers seem to have this game down as a low-to-moderate goal fest with ‘Both teams to score - Yes’ coming in at 7/10 and ‘Over 2.5 goals’ at 9/10, but we think the odds on Toluca’s win are good enough to take for this game and if América don’t get in the match we could see a 1-0 away win.
Turco’s team are the form favourites and have a better head-to-head record than their opponents, but with two Concacaf ties in their legs and América having a busy week in the same competition it could be a tactical battle.
