- Pachuca and Toluca finished 4th and 5th in the Clausura 2026 regular season, on 31 and 30 points respectively.
- Toluca won four of the last 10 meetings between the two clubs in all competitions, with Pachuca taking three and three ending in draws.
- The bookies make Toluca 73/100 favourites to win Monday’s first leg with Pachuca 82/25 and the draw 71/25.
Toluca Tuna can hook Pachuca in a classic
Toluca and Pachuca are as evenly matched as any of the quarter-final clashes in this year’s Mexican League playoff round and should provide a classic clash on Monday with the home side’s superior recent record against Pachuca just enough to edge them over the line in the first leg.
Antonio Mohamed’s men have been a bit all over the place in their last five Liga MX matches, winning just one, but they did finish the Clausura season on a real high by thrashing León 4-1 at home. Mohamed is a very direct and pragmatic manager who knows his best team and rotates wisely, ensuring that Toluca are always compact and tough to break down in their preferred 4-2-3-1 system.
They can be dangerous on the break and from set pieces and have real firepower at the top of the pitch in Paulinho, who has been on a scoring spree in both Liga MX and the Concacaf Champions Cup. He has ranked among the league's top scorers and Toluca’s most creative player, which is why Mohamed’s tactical plan revolves around him.
Pachuca have a physical and talented striker
Pachuca are a younger, more dynamic team that plays in a similar system to Toluca, either 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3, depending on the game. Esteban Solari’s side do a lot of transition play and create overloads in wide areas with their pace and pressing. However, the visit of Toluca for the first-leg will be all about set pieces and the battle in midfield.
Pachuca, who famously thrashed Toluca 8-2 on aggregate in the 2022 Apertura final, were much more consistent through April, beating Monterrey and Santos Laguna in the league. But they fell away in their final two games with consecutive defeats, although Pachuca still finished ahead of Toluca in the standings.
Solari’s men have a real goal poacher in Salomón Rondón, who is a big, physical presence up top with enough skill to score goals himself and enough power to hold up the ball for others. Oussama Idrissi and Robert Morales provide plenty of pace and creativity on the wings while Víctor Guzmán, who has found his shooting boots in April including a multi-goal game versus Santos Laguna, drives Pachuca’s midfield surges.
Rain could lead to an end-to-end affair
We’re not expecting Pachuca to be as gung-ho as they were in that 2022 final and believe Toluca’s home advantage and Paulinho’s form should give them the edge in the match result. But Pachuca’s consistency and attacking depth should keep this fixture on a knife-edge, so we’re leaning towards the draw option for small stakes.
The ‘Both teams to score - Yes’ market is overpriced at 59/100 given both sides have scored and conceded plenty of goals in their recent games. Set piece battles and the midfield contest will decide this fixture but Pachuca’s individual brilliance and Toluca’s direct play could lead to fireworks if it rains before kick-off in Toluca, as it may do.
Sebastián Córdova, who added to his Liga MX goals with a goal in Toluca’s 4-1 win over León, adds a great touch to the home team’s play and is a good anytime scorer pick, as are Marcel Ruíz or Alexis Vega if they are selected on the left-hand side of the attack.
