- Derry have played a mixed Premier Division campaign to stay in the race for European places.
- Tolka Rovers are sitting 10th of 14 in the Leinster Senior League, which represents a huge step up in class.
Bigger fish to dominate smaller fish
Sunday's FAI Cup tie represents the first ever serious contest between Derry City and Tolka Rovers AFC, as neither side have ever met in a senior competitive fixture in any competition according to public records.
The game represents a massive step up in the class for Tolka Rovers, who have played a mixed bag of games in the Leinster Senior League, winning eight, drawing six and losing 12 so far this season.
That record is poor, even allowing for the fact that they have scored at a rate of 1.4 goals per game and conceded more than they've scored.
Tolka to get men behind the ball
Tolka Rovers will set up much more pragmatically under their club staff, and Tiernan Lynch has organised and injected ambition into Derry's game since taking over in late 2024.
Lynch's 4-2-3-1 shape and high-tempo pressing game should ensure that Derry are on the front foot for the vast majority of the game, while Tolka's game plan on the road is to get their men behind the ball.
Derry are the heavy favourites at 7/50 with the draw priced at 13/2, so we're taking the hosts to win this one with a clean sheet given the Tolka Rovers will try to frustrate Derry for as long as they can.
Duffy could make it a long evening for the away side
In Michael Duffy, Derry have one of the most dangerous attacking players in the country. Duffy's exploits on the big occasion are also worth noting as he has the knack of finding the net in tight games, which should be good enough to ensure Tolka have a long night. Adam O'Reilly provides the bite in the centre of the park to ensure Derry can maintain control of games and play it into their frontline, while Conor Barr has been a reliable rotation option throughout Lynch's time in charge. Given the gulf in class and the setting of Brandywell in mild July weather, this match should be a cup day for the home side and a 2-0 or 3-0 home win looks the likeliest outcome.
