- Elgin City sit 7th in League Two, with 33 points from 28 games, and have been solid rather than spectacular in 2025-2026.
- Forfar Athletic have been marginally better, sitting 5th with 35 points, and showing some form with two wins, two draws and just one defeat from their last five.
Sides set to cancel each other out in mid-table clash
Two solid but unspectacular sides will face off on Tuesday when Elgin City host Forfar Athletic in a mid-table League Two clash. Both sides have shown good solidity and have the right amount of quality to achieve their respective goals, but neither has a great deal of quality or flair.
Elgin have been more consistent, but lacklustre this season. Allan Hale has impressed since his December 2023 appointment as Elgin City boss, instilling a pragmatic, shape-based 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 which is hard to break down, and which can be effective on the counterattack when needed.
Forfar, meanwhile, have been more variable, but James Weir’s direct, no-nonsense approach has served his men well since he took over in November 2024. Forfar play a standard 4-4-2, but with a real focus on width, quick transitions and winning second balls. While not a free-scoring side, their attacking threat is usually present, especially from set pieces.
Elgin have the edge
With Forfar scoring an average of 1.21 goals per game on their travels in League Two, and Elgin having conceded 22 goals in 14 home fixtures, neither side looks likely to tear apart the other in this encounter.
However, home advantage should just see Elgin through. They are priced as favourites at 24/25, and are the rightful favourites in this matchup, having won 1 and drawn 1 of their last two home games.
Elgin held Dumbarton to a 1-1 draw on home turf last time out, following back-to-back defeats on the road to East Kilbride and Annan Athletic. Forfar’s last two away games, meanwhile, saw them dominate Stirling Albion in a 3-0 win, before being edged out 1-0 by Spartans FC.
Rennie can make a difference
This game could go either way, but Hale’s ability to keep his team compact and disciplined should see them through, while Weir’s tactics have seen Forfar pose a threat in wide areas, and in the air from set-pieces. Martin Rennie’s 10 goals in 28 League Two appearances make him a constant threat for the Loons, while Ryan Sargent’s 7 goals make him Elgin’s main man, netting two of their last six.
Given the solid nature of both sides, expect a tight, cagey contest, but back Elgin City, who are tough to beat at home, to nick the 3 points.
