Toulouse should trouble Lyon
There are two very different styles on display in Ligue 1 2026-2027 at Stadium Municipal on Saturday when FC Toulouse host the free-flowing Olympique Lyonnais.
Jens Berthel Askou has moulded a team with a strong base of defensive structure but also capable of playing on the front foot from a fast turnover when possession turns over. The Violets will look to set up a compact block and hit the Gones on the break, so this has the potential to be a real chess match in places.
On the other hand, Paulo Fonseca has installed the ball domination and positional play to Lyon's game since taking the helm in January 2025, albeit with some tactical adaptability and full-back rotations when the opportunity arises. The only thing we know for sure about this game is that Lyon will have the ball more than Toulouse and that the visitors will need to be ready when the hosts spring the trap.
Games involving Lyon tend to be end-to-end
Santiago Hidalgo has been the sharpest sword for Toulouse with two goals in their last five games across all competitions. But Lyon have a real threat in the midfield with Corentin Tolisso having bagged two of his team's five goals in the same period.
Toulouse have scored eight goals in six home games across all competitions this season, which averages 1.33 per game and that's usually enough as they are happy to see the game out. Les Violets have won two, drawn two and lost two at home, which is a decent return given they have played two of the best four teams in Europe during that period.
Lyon have averaged just 1.00 goals per away game across all competitions, which isn't great with only four in four. They were thumped 4-0 by Real Betis and lost 2-1 at Sparta Praha before bouncing back with a 3-0 home win over the same opponent.
Game could go either way
Fonseca's side have won three of their last five and lost twice, so they've got more of a sting to them. But Lyon's away record across all competitions is one win and three defeats from four and there are cracks in that record.
The Gones have won two of the last three when they have travelled to Toulouse in this head-to-head, so they know how to get a result on the road. But Toulouse will have learned from their 2-1 win over Lyon at home in Ligue 1 2025/2026 and they could get another result here.
Lyon are the slight favourites at 59/50, but we'll take the home side to make it tight at 41/20. The draw is priced at 51/20, but we'll go with Toulouse (4 wins, 2 draws and 4 losses) as that mid-table form seems to be the norm.
Over 2.5 goals at 73/100 and BTTS Yes at 57/100 are both solid selections in this game, but we'll have a flutter on BTTS Yes in the hopes of an end-to-end match.
