Local rivals both looking to make late season progress
Kettering Town boss Richard Lavery has overseen a solid campaign for The Poppies since taking over the reins in February 2024, with the club’s ability to switch seamlessly between a back-four and back-three system key to their success.
The team’s pragmatic approach has kept them safe at the back, particularly at home where they have conceded just 16 goals at an average of 0.89 per game in the league. However, it has not been all defence with Edward Panter hitting a purple patch in front of goal recently, helping the hosts to three wins, one draw and just one defeat in their last five outings, most recently a 2-1 victory at home to Real Bedford.
Chris Cornes’ Worcester City have played in a very different manner to their hosts this season, with their wide and high-tempo attacking style often seeing them press high and look to win the ball back quickly. They have also pressed deep and with numbers, making them a dangerous opponent and one that forces teams to make mistakes.
Brandon Smalley has been Worcester’s main man recently with two goals in the last five, but the side’s ability to push wide and pull teams out of position has been a key factor in them making a late push for the play-offs, particularly away from home.
Worcester will test hosts’ discipline
Worcester have scored 34 goals on their travels, averaging 1.70 goals per-game away. However, this match will be a real tactical battle as Lavery’s flexibility is pitted against Cornes’ high-energy attacking strategy and it will be fascinating to see how it plays out on Saturday.
Kettering have a strong home record this season with 10 wins, four draws and just four defeats from 18 league outings at the Latimer Park, but the 229/100 on the visitors is attractive with the two sides separated by just three points in the league table and a 1-1 draw when they last met in the competition.
Poppies have the edge
The bookies make Kettering favourites at 49/50 and, given their home form and the away record of Worcester, we’re happy to side with the hosts for this one. The ‘Over 2.5 goals’ market also appeals at 19/25 as both teams can be attack-minded and we expect the visitors to have a go against their local rivals.
