- Longford Town have failed to win either of their two home matches so far in the 2026 First Division, (1 draw, 1 loss).
- Wexford FC are unbeaten on the road in the 2026 First Division, (1 win, 2 draws from 3 matches).
- Longford Town have won 2 and drawn 1 of the last 3 meetings between the clubs.
Town are yet to get off the mark in 2026
Longford Town sit 9th in the 2026 First Division table after taking just three points from five games, as they failed to build any momentum in the early stages of the season. Town’s last three games have seen them draw 1-1 at struggling Kerry FC, hold title-contenders UCD to a 0-0 draw at home, and narrowly lose 2-1 away to a talented Cork City side, the result that was probably the fairest of the three.
Gary Cronin’s side can be extremely dangerous on the counter-attack, especially when they can push up the pitch at speed and get numbers forward. However, the pressing style they employ can leave holes in defence when they get beaten, and that has proven costly so far. Cronin will set them up in their usual pragmatic 4-2-3-1 and will look to double up on the double-pivot in midfield to protect against a strong Wexford FC attack.
Ryan’s side are a tough nut to crack
Wexford FC have had a more consistent start to the 2026 campaign, and currently sit 5th in the table with six points from their first five games. Ian Ryan’s team are a real departure from the last iteration of the club and they look to be a much more structured, disciplined side, built around a solid 4-2-3-1 formation. Ryan’s men are more patient in possession and look for overloads on the wide areas, rather than launching the ball into the box and hoping for the best.
Wexford have drawn each of their last three matches, including two tough trips to Athlone Town (2-2) and Finn Harps (1-1), before a 1-1 home draw with Kerry FC last time out. The Blood and Blues have only lost once in their last five (W1, D3, L1), and remain unbeaten on the road in the league this term.
A true test for both managers
The contrast between the two sides should make for an interesting game of chess in the middle third, with Wexford happy to build patiently and Longford looking to make their move on the break. However, Wexford’s impressive away record and Longford’s inability to get off the mark at home this term suggests that the visitors are most likely to edge it on Saturday.
Wexford FC are a slight favourite at 6/5, although Longford are close behind at 21/10, with the draw at 49/20 also appealing to some. I’m also going for a Both Teams to Score bet at 31/50, as the teams can both definitely play their part in this one.
