- Arsenal lead 2 - 1 in this UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-final after a dramatic first leg win.
- Recent head-to-heads between Olympique Lyonnais (W) and Arsenal (W) have been fiercely contested, with Arsenal winning 4 - 1 at Lyon in April 2025 and Lyon winning 2 - 1 in London in October 2025.
Thunder and lightning to shake the UWCL semi-final
With both teams in good form, there is a great deal of confidence in both camps going into Saturday’s semi-final second leg at Groupama Stadium, but only Arsenal (W) will be convinced of their ability to finish the job after earning a 2-1 aggregate advantage at the Emirates. Gunner boss Renée Slegers has done a fantastic job of blending her team’s high-pressing, quick transition and high-tempo style into an ultra-flexible system capable of coming back from behind.
Alessia Russo remains Arsenal’s top goalscorer in all competitions, but the Italian’s finishing prowess has been complemented by the likes of Olivia Smith, who bagged the winner in last week’s first leg. Her emerging reputation as a big-game player could be further enhanced if she scores at Lyon and the Gunners are coming off a great run of form with four wins in their last five competitive fixtures.
However, they are playing against a Lyon team that has dominated the Division 1 Féminine campaign with 63 points from 20 games, making them almost unbeatable in domestic football. Jonatan Giráldez has led Les Fenottes to domestic trophies and European momentum since taking over in June 2025 and his team are used to winning big - except when they play Arsenal.
Lyon’s star player can make a difference
Melchie Dumornay is one of the top scorers in the UWCL and is a constant threat to teams when she receives the ball. Her ability to take on defenders and bring others into the play is a major factor in Lyon’s success and she is the best player on the pitch when they click. Kadidiatou Diani and Tabitha Chawinga have been key goalscorers in Division 1 this season, so Lyon always have multiple avenues to create chances.
Christiane Endler’s experience in goal will provide the hosts with extra belief and comfort on another massive night in the club’s history, particularly at home. Lyon’s home record in Europe is formidable, but Arsenal’s recent knockout pedigree, particularly in coming from behind, suggests the visitors will not be intimidated by the occasion.
Semi-final should be a tight, tense affair
The bookmakers make Lyon the favourites at 63/100, Arsenal 361/100 and the draw 31/10, which seems a little skewed towards the hosts. However, with Leah Williamson back to provide stability to a solid defensive unit, Arsenal should be able to hold up against a team that can come at them from a variety of angles.
The ‘Both teams to score - Yes’ market looks overrated at 57/100 given the recent attacking form of both, but it is worth noting that Lyon beat Strasbourg 6-0 in the Coupe de France and Arsenal beat Chelsea 3-1 in a UWCL quarter-final first leg. A place in the UWCL final and some serious bragging rights are at stake, so this should be a close, tense affair with one mistake or moment of brilliance making all the difference.
Weather forecasts predict the possibility of thunderstorms in Lyon on Saturday, which could add some extra drama to what should be a classic semi-final clash.
