South are hard to beat
League One’s 2025-2026 season is well into its final quarter and Queen of the South are doing well enough to warrant a look for promotion and the play-offs. Doomsday is fourth in the table on 46 points from 32 games and have the joint-best defensive record in the division. Cove Rangers are eighth on 28 points from 31 matches but do not have South’s pedigree.
Peter Murphy has installed a compact, robust side in Dumfries that are direct in the forward areas and can play at a tempo. They are also capable of bringing the pace back if needed and can be dangerous when the opposition is tired. South have several good players but Kai Kennedy has been particularly impressive in recent weeks, with eight League One goals this season and three assists in his last five matches.
The Doomsday have not been able to win either of their last two home league fixtures against Cove Rangers, but the visitors are also on a mixed run, winning only one of their last five and losing the last time out to Alloa Athletic. Paul Hartley has got a blend of experience and energy about him that seems to suit the players well, as well as a tactical flexibility to adapt to situations with either a 4-3-3 or two up top.
Goals both ways expected
South’s 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 formations have been good for the physical presence of their centre forward and the use of their wide players, while Cove play a more possession-based style with the ability to press or stay compact. With South conceding 20 in 16 home matches and Cove 20 in 15 away, goals seem likely on Saturday.
Both teams have scored in all three of the hosts’ last three, so we’re going with both teams to score here. Cove’s Christopher Maguire, who has scored two of the team’s last five goals, and Mitchell Megginson, who has nine in 25 League One appearances and is the club’s top scorer, give them attacking options. Kai Kennedy has eight for South, their top scorer, while Nicky Clark has three in the last five and should be a threat in the box here.
