Micky Mellon has made an interesting team out of Oldham Athletic since taking over in October 2023, with his 3-5-2 system providing a very high-tempo game for fans to enjoy. Oldham are a pressing team, a direct side and a team that loves to get wide with their wing-backs and get the ball into the box. This isn’t a side with a huge amount of crafty players and ball-playing ability, but they do get the job done.
Oldham come into Saturday’s game in better form than Shrewsbury Town, having won three and drawn one of their last five after a 3-1 away success over Colchester United last time out. The Latics sit 9th in the table on 65 points from 41 games, 21 ahead of the hosts in 18th who have collected 44 points from the same amount of games.
Gavin Cowan took over from Paul Hurst late in January 2026 and has done a decent job making the Shrews a lot more compact and a transition-first team rather than a team that plays through the ball. Shrewsbury have made the Latics’ job easier by narrowing the game and that will suit Oldham’s style, but the visitors could have a bit more about them in this clash and their odds of 6/5 make them the right bet. This game can go either way, as the last meeting between the sides did when it finished 2-2 five months ago, but Oldham have the momentum of form to take the victory.
