Latics look likely to lay out Latics
Oldham Athletic are the favourites to win when they travel to Barrow, but the odds of 31/25 on offer for Micky Mellon’s men are too short for the Latics to be backed with any real conviction.
That’s not to say the visitors aren’t likely to get the job done on Tuesday, but they have been afforded too much respect by the bookmakers and Barrow are the right price to avoid defeat.
The hosts are in the wrong place at the wrong time here, with this match pitting their pragmatic 3-5-2 setup against Oldham’s flexible four-man defensive structure. Barrow prefer to set up in a low block and counterattack, but their tactical identity has been disrupted by the constant managerial merry-go-round they have been through this season.
Sam Foley’s appointment as head coach in March 2026 has done little to settle things, with Barrow posting one win, one draw and three defeats in their last five League Two fixtures.
Danny Rose has been their spark in that time, netting two of their last three goals across five games, and Oldham will need to be careful of the wingers Barrow can deploy if they are to grab all three points at Holker Street.
Latics have balance to see out close encounters
Mellon’s side have been tough to break down away from home since he took over in October 2023, with the Latics conceding an average of 0.95 goals per away game in League Two, while they are scoring an average of 1.30 per game. This balance, combined with their ability to change from a disciplined mid-block to a vertical passing game, will see them through against the counter-attacking home side on Tuesday.
Oldham are ninth in League Two with 65 points from 41 games while Barrow are 23rd with 33 after the same number of matches. The Latics can afford to be patient and let Barrow try to make a game of it, but they are capable of breaking out and scoring the goal that could settle a close encounter.
Mike Fondop-Talum, with eight goals in 37 League Two games, is Oldham’s most reliable target up top and Kane Drummond has hit a purple patch with three in his last five. The reverse fixture finished 0-0 at Oldham earlier this season, but Oldham’s recent uptick in goals on the road and their strong away record overall should see them secure victory.
