UCD will look to be a test
A 6-0 win in the Premier Division 2023 seems a long time ago, but Derry City's statement victory over UCD in 2023 still looms over this 2026 Club Orange FAI Cup tie. Derry are top dogs in the H2H and in the current Irish football hierarchy, but with a Premier Division team playing a First Division side in a knockout tie, UCD should put up a test.
UCD bounced back from a 1-2 home defeat to Treaty United FC by beating Wexford FC 4-1 in the First Division 2026, while Derry's response to their UEFA Conference League defeat to HNK Rijeka (0-1 at home) was to beat Sligo Rovers FC 2-0 at home. Derry's result against Rijeka was a defeat, following a 0-0 away draw to St Patrick's Athletic.
Derry to deliver a transition test
UCD are a well structured side set up by Andy Myler, but they are not built to win matches by pressing, rather to be compact, patient in build-up, and controlled in midfield. Derry's style is quite the opposite in that Tiernan Lynch's men play with tempo, transition quickly and look to press and win the ball back quickly before making their way into the wide areas.
That could be a recipe for a classic possession-versus-transition clash and UCD will need to keep the pace down to make a game of it. The hosts haven't won any of their last three home H2Hs, so history is firmly on Derry's side.
Derry’s all-round edge can tell
Both sides come into this game in mixed form, but neither have exactly been dismal either. UCD have won three, drawn one and lost one of their last five, while Derry have won two, drawn one and lost two of their last five, so the form lines are similar. Derry's all-competitions record reads 3 wins, 2 draws and 5 defeats across their last ten, so they have a few dents in the armour.
Derry are the heavy favourites in the 1X2 market at 11/20, while UCD are a huge 377/100 outsiders, with the draw available at 16/5. The odds and H2H suggest it's going to be a straightforward affair, but we're not so sure. UCD have been solid at home, so it could be a bit more awkward for the visitors than the market suggests.
