Wigan still have a step-up to make
Wigan U21 come into the Professional Development League clash with Huddersfield U21 off the back of an impressive run in the same competition, but they will be wary of the Terriers' attacking threat. Chris Brown's Latics have seen plenty of goals in recent weeks and although they are coming off two huge wins, this is another test of their defensive character.
The Latics' recent league form reads two wins, two draws and one defeat in their last five games, but there's no denying that they've been playing some of their best attacking soccer of the season. They were relentless in a 6-4 win over Colchester U21 and a 4-1 victory against Sheffield Wednesday U21 in their previous two matches.
Adam Moseley has been their spark in those two games, popping up as a leading scorer and proving a constant threat in the box. The Latics have a number of other runners in attack too, making them dangerous and capable of scoring multiple goals against any opponent in the division.
Terriers have been sharp
Huddersfield U21 have been just as sharp in the early weeks of the new season, beating Millwall U21 4-2 in their away match of the PDL 2026-2027 campaign. Michael Tonge's Terriers have been fast and they've been organised, with a small positive goal difference. They sit in the mid to lower mid-table with around six points and a positive goal difference, while Wigan are right alongside them in the mid-table. Huddersfield are a little more teacher-like in their approach and this should allow them to control the pace and rhythm of this game better. Cian Philpott is one of the team's key attacking outlets, while young forward Zac Abbott adds some bite to the frontline. However, this is a team that thrives on quick transitions and getting bodies in behind.
Game of two halves
Wigan have more of a structure-first approach, but the same open style has left them exposed in several high-scoring games this season. We're getting both of these teams at similar odds in this match with Huddersfield the slight favourites at 26/25, Wigan just behind at 42/25 and the draw priced at 17/5. It's a similar market to their head-to-heads which the two have split in the past couple of seasons.
Huddersfield have shown a little more about their ability to travel and get the better of opponents in this division, while their form has been a lot more consistent. The 9/50 line for over 2.5 goals looks heavy, so we're taking Huddersfield to edge this game or the game to be drawn in a high-scoring affair that should suit both teams.
