- Arsenal are undefeated in their last six European competitive games against Sporting (3 wins, 3 draws, 1-0 win away in 1st leg)
- English clubs have won the last nine all-time Champions League quarter-finals against Portuguese clubs
- Sporting are second in the Portuguese Primeira Liga and have won several recent domestic games, but they lost the 1st leg at home
Sporting’s speed and width can test Arsenal’s defence
Sporting Clube de Portugal will head into the second leg of their UEFA Champions League 2025-2026 quarter-final with Arsenal in a defensive mindset after their 1-0 home defeat to the Gunners, but the Portuguese side remain a big threat to Mikel Arteta’s side.
Rúben Amorim’s men dominated large portions of the 1st leg, but fell to a stoppage-time winner and need at least two goals to keep their European dream alive. A victory or draw would take Arsenal through to the UCL semi-finals and keep their double in sight, so the stakes will be high on Wednesday.
Sporting are in good form domestically and showed their European mettle by completing a 5-0 extra-time comeback to beat Bodø/Glimt in their dramatic round of 16 tie. Amorim’s back-three system is flexible and can become a back-five with the push of his wingbacks, who work hard to provide width for Luis Suárez’s main attacking line.
Gunners’ defence, discipline and a Gyökeres goal can get them through
The Sporting bench boss is just as fluid in the way he presses and transitions in the final third and makes bold changes to mix up the tempo and flow of games. He did both of those things in Norway when Sporting came back to win 5-0 in extra-time against Bodø/Glimt after being three goals down.
The Lions of Lisbon will have to be at their best again to get a result at the Emirates, where Arsenal are very strong and undefeated in their last six European meetings against Sporting. But the Gunners have looked a bit jaded in April, going down to Bournemouth and Southampton in cup clashes and losing to Manchester City in the Premier League.
Arteta’s team sit top of the table on 70 points from 32 games, but their form has been patchy of late. Declan Rice provides the anchor and control that allows Arteta to be so adventurous with his pressing and rotations, but the sheer number of games and a few injuries have begun to tell.
Back the hosts to edge the tie and take the game to Sporting
Arsenal beat Sporting 5-1 in Lisbon in the 2024 Champions League group stage and knocked the Lions out in earlier Europa League ties, so there’s good reason to believe Arteta’s men will get through this game. They are 1.4 favourites to do so, which is probably the right price given Sporting are around 7.5 with a draw 4.4.
We will take Arsenal to edge the game and the tie, but Sporting’s need to attack and Gyökeres’ desire to impress against his old club means there is a good chance for some late drama.
Backing under 2.5 goals at 2.1 looks like the best play here, although there is a clear chance for the home side to keep their lead by sticking to their structured possession game and hitting Sporting on the counter. Arsenal’s superior tactical discipline and clinical edge should be enough to see them through, but Sporting can score at any time on their counter-attacks.
