- Chivas are the top team in the Clausura 2026 with 34 points from 15 games.
- Tijuana are 10th in the table with 19 points from 15 games and need to avoid defeat on Sunday to keep playoff aspirations alive.
- Tijuana have a slightly better head-to-head record against Chivas (W12, D8, L11).
Chivas are the clear favourites
Chivas are the big favourites in the bookies’ markets for Sunday’s top-of-the-table Liga MX clash with Xolos at 1.35, while the visitors are a big price at 7.5 and the draw is 5.25. The bookies are not alone in giving Milito’s men the edge here as the media consensus is that Chivas have it all to take this and secure their place as the superlíder - the best seed for the playoffs at the end of the regular season.
But the hosts will not get an easy ride against a Tijuana side that has a good record against them and have proved themselves to be capable of pulling off the occasional upset in recent years.
Chivas have been in scintillating form in the second half of the season, smashing 16 goals in their last five matches, including two 5 - 0 home thrashings and a 3 - 2 away win over Monterrey. They have the attacking players that can score goals like that - and the defence that can concede them in the wrong games like a 4 - 1 defeat to Tigres.
Two very different philosophies collide
Abreu’s side will set up to stifle Chivas’ possession game and play counter, so this could become a battle of wide areas and the half spaces if Milito’s pressing lines are broken. The Xolos have a decent recent record against the Guadalajara club, but their pragmatic style doesn’t always bring the points.
Xolos have a slightly better head-to-head record against the Chivas, winning 12 and losing 11 of their 31 meetings since Tijuana joined the top flight. The two clubs have drawn eight times and there could be another here.
Home advantage
Milito has brought order to Chivas with his three-centre-back system, but his possession-based game is also high-pressing and is built around structure and balance. Xolos, on the other hand, play at a faster tempo and more varied style that looks to press in situations where it can be effective and get numbers forward quickly.
Chivas are the most balanced team in the division right now and have been the most dangerous for long periods of this Clausura. Tijuana have more variance in their games and look capable of shocking the hosts with an early goal to make it a nervous evening for Milito’s side.
Key men
Armando ‘Hormiga’ González is Chivas’ marksman, among the Clausura’s top scorers and fresh from a goal-scoring spree including doubles in recent home wins.
Kevin Castañeda is Xolos’ most advanced and prolific threat, creating big chances and testing the opposition keeper regularly.
Stats, strategy and bets
Tijuana’s recent form has been mixed, but it is dangerous, with three wins and one draw from their last five and the ability to pull off a shock like their 3 - 0 away win over León or a 1 - 0 victory at home to Tigres. But they also have the capability to slip up and lose 3 - 0 to Necaxa, so they will need to get a goal early on to pressure the home side.
The Over 2.5 goals bet is heavily favoured here at 1.46, but both teams to score, also priced under even money, looks a safer play at 1.75. Backing Chivas to win 1-0 or 2-0 is the obvious recommendation, but the chance of a 1-1 upset should also be noted given the narrow edge Tijuana have against Chivas and the fact that both clubs have players who can make magic happen.
Estadio AKRON’s warm evening conditions could be a factor if the game is still open when the players’ legs begin to tire of the high-tempo running.
